He was born Feb. 18, 1921 in Adams. His given first name was Marion, which he changed near his joining the Navy in 1939. He lived from 1921 to 1979 in Adams, excepting the family move to Minatare in 1928 and return to Adams in 1931, and during his active duty in the U.S. Navy from 1939 to 1945. John was the 13th of 14 children born to Ulysses L. and Lucy Pittman. John met the love of his life at an early age, Mary Amazine Williams, and they married on July 28, 1943. Their engagement was extended, as Amazine did not graduate until 1941, and the war kept John apart from her for 39 months. They lived and worked in Adams, raising three children Dennis, Pamela, and David. John was the happiest when he was surrounded by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. John's occupation was that of Brick Mason, instructed by his father and older brother Jim. He was a partner in business with his brother Robert (Bob) for many years. They gave many young men, including sons and nephews regular work in tending them on brick, fireplace, stone, and block jobs during this career. John retired in 1979 and with Amazine (Amy), began a second career as Apartment Managers in Lakewood, Colorado until 1987. At that time they moved to Columbia, Mo. for a year, but settled back in Nebraska, first at Tecumseh, then in Sterling, and for a year with health problems in Tecumseh and Nebraska City. They have resided in a Nursing Care Center in Columbia, Mo. since September 2007. It is quite likely that John is fishing in heaven at this moment. John is survived by his loving wife Amy of 68 years of Columbia, two sons, Dennis Pittman and wife Sue of Fort Collins, Colo. and David Pittman and wife Jackie of Columbia, Mo.; one daughter, Pam Stieren and husband Jim of Sterling; six grandchildren, Debbie Garza and husband John of Fort Collins, Colo.; Angie Dolbow of Sterling; Amber and Brady Pittman of Columbia, Mo, Travis Pittman of Innsbruck, Austria; Cory Pittman and wife Janell of Johnston, IA; ten great-grandchildren, Brooke, Cole, Jake and Lucas Garza, Trevor, Ashlynn, Josh, Caleb and Gracyn Dolbow and David Pittman; one sister, Roberta Sugden of Lincoln; three sisters-in-law, Betty Pittman, Agatha and Mildred Williams; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ulysses L. and Lucy Gell Pittman; 12 brothers and sisters; one grandson, Tim Pittman; one grandson-in-law, Dean Dolbow. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 7, 2012, at the United Methodist Church of Adams with Rev. Hugh Giesbrecht officiating. Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery of Adams. A family prayer service will be held at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday at the church. A memorial has been established to the Alzheimer's Association. Military graveside honors will be conducted by American Legion Post 0221 and VFW Post 10042 of Adams. The body will lie in state at the Fox Funeral Home of Adams from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday and at the church one hour preceding the service on Wednesday.
