JOHN BOYTE DIES IN 85TH YEAR Man of Sterling Character, Beloved by Many and Respected by All Mr. John H. Boyte died at the Ellen Fitzgerald Hospital at five-thirty Friday afternoon in his 85th year. Though declining in energy for some time and living almost in retirement, his final illness had been short. The death of Mr. Boyte removed a real landmark, a man always of even and amiable temper who never got mad but who had the courage of his convictions through a long and useful life. In his latter years he became a general favorite among the young men who knew him and always contended that he himself was still a young man. In his old age, as a means of recreation and for associating with his younger friends, he learned to play golf. But like everything else in life, he took golf temperately and it was no hardship for the young men who played with him to slow down to meet his quiet pace. Mr. Boyte was for many years clerk and treasurer of the city of Monroe…in his long service he put his duty and interest of the city that he served before everything else. And he served efficiently….worked patiently with whatever administration that came along…treating them…as well-meaning but inexperienced children. Born in Goose Creek township and descendant of the sturdy Boyte, Crowell and other settlers of that region, in early life he was a school teachers, then a surveyor. He was made county school examiner years ago and frequently county surveyor. He came to Monroe 55 years ago. He was careful and accurate and his previous training fitted him for his long years of service to the city. Mr. Boyte is survived by his wife, who was Miss Frances Furr, and their four daughters, Mrs. Stamey Helms; and Mrs. C. A. Wilson of Monroe; and Mrs. D. R. S. Frazier of Shelby, and Mrs. Sam F. Brown of Charlotte. Also by three grandsons, Lt. D. R. S. Frazier, Jr., of the Army Air Corps, John Boyte Frazier, and Claude Wilson, Jr. Mr. and Mrs. Boyte had observed their 61st wedding anniversary on the second of this month. The funeral was held from the house on Houston street at five o'clock Saturday afternoon. The service was conducted by Rev. Harry Hawthorne, pastor of the Lutheran church of which Mr. Boyte was a lifelong member, assisted by Rev. J. R. Armbrust of Central Methodist church. Two of his favorite hymns were sung, "Abide with Me," and "Have Thine Own Way, Lord." Interment was in the Monroe cemetery. Active pall bearers were his three sons-in-law, Messrs Samuel F. Brown, D. R. S. Frazier, and C. A. Wilson, and two nephews, Messrs W. L. Dixon and Martin Helms, and Mr. D. B. Gettys. Honorary pall bearers were members of the Lutheran church council, Messrs Roy Currie, A. M. Curlee, R. A. Lail, H. S. Helms, and W. R. Wherry; directors of the American Bank and Trust Company, Messrs W. H. Wood, O. B. This is the result of the contest for names submitted in response to an offer of $5 in gold by Dillon & Sons, for a name to be placed on the new tent. [Dillon & Sons, a furniture store, was one of the main undertakers of the area] In the contest 34 names were suggested. When they were placed before the aldermen they were numbered consecutively and no names were known as to who suggested them. Out of the 34 names sent in two, "Sun Crest" and "Hill Side", were regarded as most appropriate, and finally "Sun Crest" was selected. No one knew who had sent in the name…[but] it was found that Mr. J. H. Boyte had made the successful suggestion. The aldermen were grateful for…the interest shown in the matter.
