Description	:	John immigrated from Ireland in 1848. He applied for naturalization in New York City 25 October 1860. He was officially naturalized 13 October 1866. His address was 463 Greenwich St., New York City. During the Civil War his mother's address was 462 Washington St., New York City, which was one street west of John. Enlisted: 8 August 1862, New York City, New York He was a Private with the 4th Regiment, New York Volunteer Heavy Artillery, Company F. Then served with 3rd New York Individual Battery. John was later attached and served with Battery B, 1st Rhode Island Light Artillery. John was captured and taken prisoner of war at Ream's Station, Virginia on or about August 25, 1864. John was taken to Petersburg Virginia and remained there 3 - 4 days. John was then sent to Richmond, Virginia and confined in Castle Thunder for 2 - 3 weeks. John was then sent to Belle Isle, on the James River at Richmond, where he remained for about 2 weeks. From there he was sent with other prisoners to Salisbury Rebel Prison, North Carolina and remained there until January 1865. Then he was transferred to Andersonville, North Carolina. From there he was transferred to Wilmington, North Carolina and remained there for about two weeks. There he got paroled or exchanged on the 19th day of February 1865. From there he was sent to Camp Parole, Annapolis, Maryland. From there he was furloughed for one month to visit his home in New York. After the expiration of his furlough he reported to Camp Parole, Annapolis, Maryland. He was there until being sent to his Command at Albany, New York. After he was connected with his Command, he was mustered out at Alexandria, Virginia on June 3, 1865. He was honorably discharged on June 19, 1865 at Albany, Albany County, New York. He migrated from New York to San Joaquin County in spring of 1870. He married Sarah Ann Sturgeon, 18 June 1876 in Lockeford, San Joaquin County, California. Married by Justice of the Peace J. B. Green. In 1880 Federal Census they're living in LaCenter, Clark[e] County, Washington. They divorced 1895-1900. All the children are with John in the 1900 census and the youngest is 4 yrs. old. John never remarried. Age: 76 yrs., 4 mths., 1 wk., 4 dys.
