Showalter of this city, who died at Grand Island, was buried here today. Major Showalter was a native of Virginia and eighty-two years of age. He was an officer of a militia company called on to do guard duty at the execution of John Brown and was probably the last witness of Brown's execution. In 1861 his company was ordered into the confederate service by Governor Letcher, but the young lieutenant with a third of the company joined the union forces. A few months later he was commissioned captain in the Second West Virginia infantry and in 1862 major. He commanded the regiment for two years and was almost continuously in active service. He was an intimate friend of Governor Pairpont, the "father of West Virginia," and active in political affairs. He had charge of the construction of the West Virginia penitentiary and was for four years its warden. He came to Fremont in 1881 and was deputy United States marshal for Nebraska under Marshal Bierbower, and has been deputy sheriff of Dodge county and chief of police of Fremont. For the last ten years he had been in feeble health and for two years had spent a large part of his time at the Grand Island soldier' home. His relatives were all with the south. Showalter, a member of the Soldiers' Home, passed away at that institution yesterday at the ripe age of 83 years and four months. The aged man died of paralysis. A brother from Fremont came up and accompanied the remains to that city this afternoon for burial.
