Brougher was born to Herman and Delilah Brougher on August 21, 1887, two miles north of Sycamore. He was baptized into the United Brethren Church at Sycamore. He attended school on Pennsylvania Avenue until 1900 when his family moved from the farm to Sabetha. In 1901 the family moved to their farm one mile east of Sabetha in Brown County. Later, at the age of 19, he attended Business Academy at Hiawatha. John was married to Myrtle Mary Hennigh on December 25, 1907. She was the daughter of David and Mary Hennigh. They farmed with Mr. Hennigh one mile south of "Old Price" west of Sabetha. In the fall of 1908 they moved west to Washington state where they purchased and cleared an acreage near Moses Lake and Yakima Valley to plant orchards of fruit trees. John worked as a carpenter in those frontier days building homes and anything needed. His first team of horses were wild horses bought from the Indians. In 1910 John and Myrtle decided to return to Sabetha to buy the farm where his parents lived, where the airport now lies. He was a stockman and farmer. Four children were born here, Harry, Velma, Lila and one son who died in infancy. They moved into Sabetha in 1946 and built a new home. During this time John was a full time carpenter and built many homes and farm buildings. Myrtle died October 21, 1972. Also preceding in death was a son, Harry Brougher, in 1962. John suffered a broken hip in 1968 and also in 1975. His last years were spent with his two daughters and in a rest home, where he did enjoy seeing old friends and making new ones. Surviving are two daughters, Velma Showalter Radke of Topeka and Lila Newlin and Cal of Sabetha, a daughter-in-law, Inez Brougher Stalder of Richardson, Texas, 12 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and 18 great great grandchildren. Services were held February 25, 1987 at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Charles Hanson officiated. Organ music was played by Iola M. Popkess and Dick McKim sang "In The Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Casketbearers were Fred, Charles, David and John Showalter, Greg Newlin and Craig Brougher. Memorial contributions were made to the First United Methodist Church and the Sabetha Cemetery.
