The accident occurred at the small bridge which spans the creek near the stock yards. Mr. Harty was riding with his grandson, Cornelius Dougherty, aged 9, and was giving the boy instructions in handling the car. As they approached the bridge the boy had hold of the steering wheel, but Mr. Harty, evidently fearing the lad might not steer it properly over the bridge, took hold of the wheel. In some way a wrong movement was made and the car dashed off the bridge and down into the creek, pinning both occupants beneath it. Men from the Caswell foundry and the stock yards ran to the assistance of the victims. The machine was lying across Mr. Harty's back and neck and when he was liberated it was found that his neck was broken. In a few minutes life, was extinct. There was only one mark on the body and that was on his neck. The boy was more fortunate and escaped with severe bruises and cuts, but he is now recovering and it is not thought there will be any serious results. The funeral will occur at 10 o'clock Friday morning, services being held at Immaculate Conception church. Mr. Harty was a native of Wisconsin and has resided here a good many years. He was 61 years, 4 months and 2 days old. Besides his wife he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Hugh Dougherty, three brothers and other relatives. Mr. Harty was always a great lover of horses and continued to drive them long after autos came into use. He was a careful man and his friends would have expected him to be the last man to lose his life in such a manner.
