In Ostfriesland, Jann (John) Kramer had been a peat farmer. Burning off and digging out the peat was a way of draining the land and making it ready for farming other crops. For the landless, colonizing a new area allowed them the right to settle there first. It could take years before the land was ready, and peat farmers usually made enough to live on and not get ahead. In the 1870's when Jann Kramer was age 54, he got work on sailing ships (the Raicher and the FranBeta) that moved peat for sale. This was a more lucrative business. All of Jann Kramer's ancestors had worked around the moors, probably digging peat. When he married Anna Greetsfeld in 1867, her ancestors were mostly from the "fehn" communities (those with canals for shipping), and they had held jobs such as teacher, weaver, and caretakers. Anna's mother was from the northeast corner of the Netherlands. John and Anna grew up in towns only a few kilometers apart, but their marriage brought him new opportunities. They were married for more than 50 years.
