Mr. McElroy's death was very sudden and came as a great shock to his family and friends. He was apparently in his usual health, very strong for a man of his years. On the day of his death, he had been out at their farm at the home of his son, Will, helping to butcher a beef. On the way home late that afternoon, his grandson, Raymond, who was driving the car noticed him suffering with a pain in the left side but it was only momentary. Shortly after arriving at home, he complained of not feeling well and his wife administered home remedies and got him to lie down, which relieved him. In a few minutes, he called for a drink and while she was gone to get it he began breathing heavily. Aid was summoned quickly but inside of five minutes, he breathed his last. John H. McElroy was born January 31, 1846, in Banbridge, County Down, Ireland, of Scotch ancestors. When 6 years of age his parents came to America, locating in Union County, Ohio. When he was seventeen years old he enlisted in Ohio Voluntary Infantry in July 1864, and served his country one year or until the close of the war. In 1869 he came to Ringgold county, Iowa, locating on a farm in Riley township. In 1871 he was married to Mary Bonham. To this union were born six children, four dying in infancy. The wife and two sons, Dr. J. H. McElroy of Grant City, Missouri, and W. H. of Lamoni, Iowa, three grandchildren, Raymond, Vaughn, and Vivian, and one great-grandchild, John Herbert, are left to mourn his loss. Besides this immediate family, he has three brothers, Samuel, William, and Charles, all residing in Ohio. He united with the Methodist Episcopal church of Mt. Zion early in the spring of 1884. After moving to Lamoni he united with the Methodist church at this place. He was an active member of both the Masonic and I.0.0.F. lodges in his younger days, but during his later life had preferred to spend his evenings at home. Mr. McElroy was a man well thought of by all and dearly loved by those who came in closer contact with his life. ***** right and honorable and loyal to the better things of life. The funeral was held from the [R.]L.D.S. Church Monday afternoon, Rev. J. Vincent Gray in charge, Rev. R. M. Shipman, former pastor of the church here, now of Nevada, Iowa, preaching the sermon. Prayer at the home by Rev. C. D. Cottingham, who preceded Rev. Gray in the Lamoni pastorate. Members of the Ralph Judson post acted as pallbearers. Service at the grave in charge of the G. A. R. The men who can tell the story of the great Civil War are fast leaving us. There are but six members of the Lamoni post left. Mr. Wm. Hart, a fellow comrade and especial friend of the deceased preceded him to the great beyond but two weeks ago.
