Description	:	Mary Ellen, daughter of Harvey and Cornelia Bonham, was born January 4, 1854, in Marion county, Ohio, and passed away at her home In Lamoni, March 9. In 1861 she came with her parents to Decatur county, Iowa. In 1871 she was married to John H. McElroy. They settled on a farm in Riley township, Ringgold county, where they lived until 1908 when they retired and moved to Lamoni. To this union were born six children, four of whom died in infancy. Read More	Mary Ellen, daughter of Harvey and Cornelia Bonham, was born January 4, 1854, in Marion county, Ohio, and passed away at her home In Lamoni, March 9. In 1861 she came with her parents to Decatur county, Iowa. In 1871 she was married to John H. McElroy. They settled on a farm in Riley township, Ringgold county, where they lived until 1908 when they retired and moved to Lamoni. To this union were born six children, four of whom died in infancy. There are left to mourn her loss two sons, James Herbert and William H., both of Lamoni; three grandchildren, Raymond of Denver, Colo., Vaughn of Lamoni, and Vivian of Blockton: twelve great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, John L. Bonham of Jamestown, N. D.; and numerous nephews and nieces. Two brothers, William H. and Oscar Barnes, and one sister, Lydia Longacre, preceded her in death. She united with the Methodist Episcopal church of Mt. Zion early in the spring of 1881. After moving to Lamoni she united with the Methodist church at this place. She was an active member of the Rebekah Lodge and of the G. A. R. auxiliary in her younger years and was a faithful worker in the Methodist Ladies Aid as long as her strength permitted. NOTE: The Iowa Gravestone Project has "CORNELIA (BOYNTON) BONHAM" as the name for Mollie's mother. Yet, the parents' marriage record puts her maiden name as BARNES. There also seems to be about a 6 year age difference between Cornelia and Harvey, with Cornelia being older. She was approximately 32 years old when she married Harvey. It may be that Harvey was her second husband and that both Boynton and Barnes names have been used by her. Which is her maiden name?? This needs further research. In the 1880 census, Harvey and his older wife, Cornelia (age 71), were still living together. The census states she was sick with Neuralgia. As she died in 1894 and he remarried in 1889, her age and illness appear to have been too much for the relationship. Although he married Sarah Ellen Johnson who was 26 years younger, he was buried with his first and divorced wife, Cornelia. It is currently unknown who cared for Cornelia in the last years of her life.
