Read More	The Valley Irrigator, 27 Jan 1955 Edition Obituary: Rites for John Sampila 70, Held Here Monday Funeral services for John Sampila, 70 year-old Newell man who passed away at John Burns Memorial Hospital in Belle Fourche early last Friday morning (21 Jan 1955) after an illness of several weeks, were conducted from the First Lutheran Church in Newell Monday afternoon (24 Jan). Rev. Wayne Neimi, Finnish Lutheran minister of Lead, conducted the services and special music included vocal selections by Mrs. K. A. Knutson at the piano. Burial was in the Newell cemetery under direction of the Anderson-Stingley Funeral Chapel of Sturgis. Pallbearers were August and Henry Ypparila, Walter Niva, Alvin and John Palo and Ernest Bottala, all of Newell. John Sampila was born August 18, 1884, in (Kannus) Finland, and came to the United States at the age of 18. He worked for many years at the Homestake Mine at Lead. On October 27, 1906, he was united in marriage to Anna Nikkila, and to this union were born seven children, two of whom died in infancy. The family resided in Terraville for nine years, later moving to a farm near Fruitdale where they lived for six years. In 1921 they moved to a farm near Newell, and they had continued to make their home here ever since. After retiring from the farm, Mr. Sampila was employed by the City of Newell for several years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna in 1935. In 1945 he was married to Mary Ranta who passed away May 21, 1949. Mr. Sampila was a member of the Finnish Lutheran church. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Martin Berg, Mrs. James Glover and Mrs. Emil Kumpula, all of Newell, and Mrs. Louie Turpen, Rapid City; a son, John Jr., of Chicago, Ill; a niece and a nephew, Mrs. George Niemi and Eino Virkkula of Butte, Mont., who were raised with the family from infancy; three step children, Mrs lillian Palmer and william Wara, Vallejo, Calif. and Oscar Wara, Lead; also six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A memorial to the Heart Fund was established in his memory. [Note: His birth date and church clearance and parent and siblings names verified by Kannus Church Records. Emigration: He left from the port of Hanko, Finland on 4 Nov 1903 and from England on 10 Nov 1903 on S. S. Saxonia. His final destination was Lead, South Dakota.
