Lead Daily Call newspaper, Monday, May 23, 1949, page 6: Former Lead Matron Dies Unexpectedly Mrs. Mary Sampila (sic), mother of Oscar Wara of Lead, died suddenly at 11 p.m., Saturday at the family home in Newell. lWhile she had been ailing for several years, her death was unexpected. The body was brought to Lead and is reposing at the Rounsevell Funeral Home. She was a member of the Finnish Apostolic Lutheran Church in Lead. She was the mother of three children, Oscar Wara of Lead, Lillian Palmer and William Wara, both of Vallejo, Calif. Other survivors in addition to her husband, John Sampila of Newell are three grandchildren. Born in Sweden September 18, 1886, she came to America in early womanhood. She was married in 1907 to William Wara in Terraville. They lived in Lead for 30 years and some time after the death of her husband married Fred Ranta of Newell. They lived on a farm adjacent to Newell until his death in 1944. She was married to John Sampila in 1947, and since that time had lived in Newell. Lead Daily Call, Friday, May 27, 1949, page 3: Mrs. Mary Sampila (sic) Is Laid To Rest A gathering of friends from Newell and vicinity augmented the attendance of Lead friends at the funeral rites held in memory of Mrs. Mary Sampila at 2 p.m. this afternoon from the chapel of the Rounsevell Funeral Home. The casket was banked with flowers. The Rev. Martti Wilkman, pastor of the Lead First Lutheran Church, conducted the service. A quintet composed of Mrs. Wilkman, Helen Silvesti, Mrs. George Kotti, Mrs. A.B. Mitchell Jr. and Mrs. George Bennett, sang two hymns, “Face to Face” and “Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross,” the former in English and the latter in Finnish. Mrs. Wilkman also played the accompaniments. Casket bearers to the municipal cemetery in South Lead included Otto Wainio, Victor Pine and Mayor Herman Kulpaca, all of Lead; William Niva and Henry and August Ypparila of Newell. The death of Mrs. Sampila occurred suddenly at 11 p.m. Saturday at the family home in Newell. She as born in Sweden September 18, 1886, and came to America in early womanhood. lShe was married in 1907 to William Wara in Terraville. They lived in Lead for 30 years until the death of her husband. She was married to John Sampila in 1947 and since that time had lived in Newell. She is survived by her husband John Sampila, three children, Oscar Wara of Lead, Lillian Palmer and William Wara of Vallejo, Calif.; several grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Hilda Lakso of Los Angeles, all of whom were present for the rites.
