Shumaker was one of the oldest and most highly esteemed residents of Mount Pleasant and Henry county. He was an Iowa man having been born in Jefferson county, September 3, 1842. His parents were Henry and Elizabeth (Oberich) Shumaker who came from the Rhineland to make their home in this new world. They were God fearing, honest; industrious and thrifty people. John was one of a family of six children of whom he was the oldest. Only one now remains namely Frank Joseph Shumaker, those departed are Rosalie, Hannah, Martha Ann, Samuel William and John. At the age of nineteen he heard the call of his country to put down the great rebellion and enlisted August 13, 1862 in Co. B 25th Iowa Infantry. He was with Sherman in his march from Atlanta to the sea, took part in the siege of Vicksburg and fought bravely in many severe engagements. He was singularly fortunate in escaping without injury or sickness amid all the awful hell of those days. He was mustered out at Washington, D.C. June 6, 1865. April 19, 1866 he and Mary Catherine Scarff were united in wedlock. Eight children came to their home. Only one survives, Mrs. Etta May Seitz of Mount Pleasant. Those departed are Charles Henry, John William, Francis Joseph, James Martin and Martha Alice, twins, Laura Ann and Samuel Arthur. Their mother died March 25, 1902. Thus more than a usual share of sorrow filled his heart and life. On November 12, 1906, he and Miss Anna M. Wright were married in Aurora, Illinois. One little daughter, Miriam, who tarried with them but a little while, was born to them. The sorrowing wife has the sympathy of many in her hour of grief. John Shumaker was a familiar figure in Grand Army circles. No gatherings of the veterans of the civil war was complete without him. He held various offices in McFarland Post of which he was an honored member. He belonged also to the Masonic lodge at Wayland and to Mystic Lodge, I.O.O.F. of Mt. Pleasant. He was a professor of faith in Jesus Christ though never identified with any particular church body. He was a brave, honest, upright man. His life was devoted to the quiet pursuits of peace following the great struggle in which he took part. Funeral services were held on Thursday forenoon. A short service was held at the home, where he passed away Tuesday, August 15, 1922. A great lovely floral tributes covered the casket, tokens of love and sympathy. Pastor Frank Weston was in charge. Comrades of the Grand Army of the Republic rendered their touching ritual and bade good-bye to their fellow veteran. Mrs. Queen Allen, Mrs. A. L. Cozier, Mrs. Helen Anderson, Mrs. M. S. Cromer and Mr. Weston sang "Mustered Out---One by One". There were many friends and neighbors gather for this home service. Then the sorrowing company repaired to Green Mound for the church service. Comrades J. W. Smith, W. P. Young, J. W. Hinkson. E. N. Kitchen, G. W. Lindsay and Sumner Rogers were the casket bearers to the hearse. At the church a large congregation was gathered in spite of the fact that Thursday was the great day of the Henry County fair. There Masonic brethren awaited the arrival of the cortege. Pastor Weston spoke fro Psalm 90:1. He paid a deservedly high tribute to the name and memory of the deceased. Mrs. Anna Harshbarger, Mrs. Susie Jay, Mr. M S. Cromer, and Mr. Weston, with Mrs. J. W. Jackson as accompanist, sang, "He Knows It All", "The Home Over There", and "It Is Well With My Soul". At the grave the impressive masonic service, conducted by Dr. A. Rommel, was rendered with unusually helpful effect. Masonic brethren from Adoniram Lodge, A. F. and A. M. 120, Wayland, were pallbearers at the church. They were H. S. Moorehouse, H. A. Mallory, L. C. Henss, W. A. Shaffer, W. K. Henss, and Lute C. Henss. Many Masonic brethren from Mt. Plesant Lodge were also present and Participated in the exercises at the grave. Interment was among beloved ones in the beautiful cemetery at Green Mound. Thus passes one of the most familiar figures from this part of Iowa. He was faithful in life's obligations and will long be held in loving remembrance by all who knew him. -------------------------
