Sunday evening another cerebral hemorhage caused physicians to give up all hope of final improvement and the patient sank gradually, passing away shortly after one o'clock Tuesday morning. Peter and Paul's church in this city at 9:30 o'clock this forenoon. June 22, 1909 - Carroll Sentinel P1, c5 Tuesday - John Herman Stevens died at his home in the third ward of this city Tuesday morning, June 15 as a result of a paralytic stroke which he received about a week or ten days previous. From the time he suffered from the stroke his life hung in the balance and he never fully regained consciousness. For several hours prior to dissolution he gradually failed and the end came like a quiet peaceful sleep. Deceased was born in Cincinnati, OH. August 15, 1850. The following year his parents moved to Guttenberg, Clayton county, Iowa, where he resided for many years. In 1871 he was united in marriage to Miss Catherine Albers. They resided in Clayton county until September, 1877 when they moved to this county and settled in Roselle township. Next year he went onto his own farm in Eden township where he lived until 1904 when he retired from active work and located in this city. To this union there were born fourteen children, eight of whom preceded the father in death. Besides the aged mother, now 91 years of age, he is survived by his wife and the following children: Mrs. Elizabeth Harmeier, Bernard, George, Clara, Catherine and Lucile. A brother, Henry Stevens, and a sister, Mrs. Henry Korwes, are left to mourn his death. The funeral was held at the SS. Peter and Paul church Thursday morning and was largely attended by relatives and friends. The deceased was a self made man, worked hard from early childhood and by his industry and thrift succeeded in accumulating a fortune variously estimated from $100,000 to a quarter of a million. It was said to be his ambition to own 20,000 acres of land but his life ended too soon for the realization of his hope and at the time of his death his holdings amounted to something like 17,000. He was a genial, warm hearted man, kind and loving husband and father and a devout Christian. He was extensively known and all his acqauintance have a good word for him and mourn his sudden departure.
