Description	:	John was the son of George Wareham (1821-1894) and Ann (Ayers) Wareham (1828-1854). He never married. "In July 3, 1876, the Indians struck again; Gus Cottle and John H. Wareham were killed at the mouth of the Dearborn twenty miles away from the Dearborn Crossing where they were staying a short time at their cabin on Clem Creek. It is supposed that they found the Indians ransacking their cabin and that a quarrel ensued in which Wareham was killed at the cabin door and Cottle a short distance away. "The Territory. W. S. Moore, of Moore's ranch, Benton road, writes under date of July 8th; David Orchard arrived here at 4 o'clock this afternoon with the information that two men, John H. Wareham and Gus. Cottle, had been found horribly murdered at Cottle's ranch on the Dearborn, about twenty miles north of the Benton road. After they were killed the bodies were thrown into a small stream that flows near the house, where they were found. Their remains will be brought to the Dearborn crossing and buried to-morrow at 9 o'clock. Wareham is a son of Geo. Wareham, of Flat creek. Cottle was a prominent stock-grower, and has resided for several years where he was killed. Indians are supposed to be the murderers. The following additional news of the murder is obtained from a letter from Geo. Warner, Benton road, to Sheriff Walker: Gus. Cottle and John Wareham left Charlie Carey's ranch, on South Fork of Sun River, on Tuesday, 2d inst., to go to Cottle's ranch, on the North Fork of the Dearborn, at the foot of the mountains. Today, (7th inst.,) Carey went to Cottle's cabin, found it broken open and robbed of bedding, provisions and blankets and one pair of new harness lines; also one bridle. In front of the door was found several pools of blood, on which a feather pillow was cut open and emptied. A stallion, dark bay or brown, no brands, is missing; also, fifteen or twenty head of horses. The fore part of last week there were seventeen Indians, suppose to be Nez Perce, and three white men, who crossed the North Fork of Sun River on Cadotte's trail en route for Missoula or Idaho. I think this is the party that murdered Cottle and Wareham. Herald." Rocky Mountain husbandman. (Diamond City, Mont.), 7/18/1878. "In Memory of John H. Wareham. Mrs. B. T. Stickney, of Craig, Mont., and her brother Stephen Wareham, of Vinton, Iowa, have placed a most beautiful monument over the grave of their brother, John H. Wareham, who is buried at Dearborn Crossing. The base is two feet square, surmounted by a marble slab, sixteen inches square, which bears this inscription: . John H. Wareham Killed by Indians July 3, 1878 . "John H. Wareham lived on Flat Creek, and on the day of his murder went to Cutler's (sic-should say Cottle) ranch on the Dearborn, It is supposed some of Chief Joseph's band, who were in the vicinity, committed the deed.
