At his home in Kirkville at 6:30 o’clock last Friday evening, a pioneer miner of Montana and one of this community’s best esteemed citizens, gave up life’s struggle, with its hopes and its trials, and fell asleep. His death was due to enlargement of the liver, a disease similar to that which claimed two more of our worthy citizens, Conrad Wipf and F. W. Herring. Mr. Hickey had been ill since last November and his decline was gradual. While his wonderful vitality sustained him longer than man ordinarily would be able to endure, it was a case of hoping against hope and those near to him realized this for several weeks. His brave battle against death was characteristic of the man. At times suffering untold agonies and ever growing weaker and weaker, he never complained and was always hopeful of recovery, ever cheerful and solicitous as to the comfort of others, even during his most trying hours. Toward the last he became unconscious and his life gradually ebbed away. All the members of his family were at his bedside at the time of his death. John Hickey was born at South Whitefield, Maine, January 27, 1847, and he came to Montana during the early days when placer mining was the state’s main industry. He was a man of powerful physique and not afraid to work. Old timers here remember him well as the strongest man in the camp. At Pioneer in 1867 he worked in the placer mines at Bratten bar, where H. M. Thomas, now of Hall, and others were interested. By these old-timers John Hickey was dubbed the “rock derrick” because he could lift and carry away a bowlder [sic] so large that it required two ordinary men to even turn it over. He was the strongest man in that camp and there were about 800 miners at work. When placer mining at Pioneer came to an end Mr. Hickey came to Philipsburg and he had made his home here since. He was one of the first miners to work in the old Granite and he was at work there on a lease when his health failed him last fall. He was a true type of that sturdy manhood which proved such a factor in the development of the west. His doctrine was a square deal for every man and he lived up to it strictly. As a husband and father he was kind and loving, as a friend ever true and loyal, and as a citizen he was honorable and upright and honest even to a fault. The news of his death will be received by his old-time friends wherever dispersed, with the greatest sadness and regret. Mr. Hickey leaves to mourn his devoted wife, five daughters, Mrs. M. A. Anderson of Butte, Mrs. Fred Lutz of this city and Misses Bertha, Ruth and Nora Hickey, one son, Neil Hickey , and one adopted son, Thos. F. Hickey, and several grandchildren. For them, and especially the suffering wife, every heart in our community is filled with sympathy and all share with them in their great loss. The funeral took place at 2:30 p.m. Monday, February 13, from Redmen’s hall in this city, under the auspices of the Granite Miners’ Union. It was a large funeral and was attended by every miner in the camp. All ceased work for the day and paid a last tribute of respect to a comrade whom all loved and esteemed. When the body of men were seen marching to the cemetery ahead of the hearse it seemed difficult to believe that there were so many miners in the camp. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. J. C. Osborne of St. Paul’s M. E. church. His address was one of the most masterly burial sermons ever heard in this city. There were three distinctive parts—a eulogy of his life and character of the departed, consolation for the family and tribute to the Miners’ Union. It deeply impressed everyone. Interment was made in the Philipsburg cemetery. The pallbearers were: Sam Clark, William Glassner, Edward Challender, Dan A. McDonald, John Schneider, and John Polich. The news came as a shock to many. For several days his most intimate friends could see the ashen hue of death stealing slowly over the wan and emaciated face and they knew that the man who was the soul of truth and spotless honor would soon pass into the great beyond. To know him intimately was to be his friend and admirer. There was in the man a nobility of soul that soared in an atmosphere where dishonor could not enter. He battled with the heroism of a Spartan against the disease that was slowly but surely ushering him towards that “bourne whence no traveler returns.” He was a prince among men, and the great generous heart that beat for justice and humanity has been stilled forever. Upon his brow all aglow with the light of the purpling east there never was a frown. He was always strong, always self-reliant, always serene. His vision was cosmic and his heart full of love for all mankind. Whilst his body is now in earth’s embrace his spirit has found fellowship in the Valhalla of the never-dying years. We bend in sorrow above his bier, pay homage to his noble life and extend heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved ones. He did well. He fought his fight and then passed out like one of the heroes of old, pointing to better things and speaking of a glory and freedom to be.
