Description	:	Manteca artist and retired farmer John Howard Frey died Saturday at home. He was 93. Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1911, his family came to Lathrop in 1922. In 1938 he bought a ranch on Louise Avenue where Libbey-Owens Ford Glass Company is located today. In the early 1960s he traded his farm with the glass plant for a ranch property on Perrin Road where he continued to farm for many years. He was 93. Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1911, his family came to Lathrop in 1922. In 1938 he bought a ranch on Louise Avenue where Libbey-Owens Ford Glass Company is located today. In the early 1960s he traded his farm with the glass plant for a ranch property on Perrin Road where he continued to farm for many years. He also opened a studio at his ranch where he taught painting to many local residents. He continued to paint and to take part in art competitions through his late 80s. He had two paintings entered in last year's Lathrop Mayor's Art Competition Show and Sale where he had previously won awards. He was one of the founding members of the Manteca Artist's Guild, along with another well-known artist Tom Olson. He was a lifelong farmer after he started painting, he taught art classes at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton and studied under well-known artists, said his oldest daughter, Jennifer Reif Snyder of Louisville, Ky. He had one surviving sibling, Doris Fox, of Rancho Cordova. His youngest brother, Leslie Frey, died just Wednesday in Ft. Bragg, Calif., after a long illness. He was preceded in death by his wife, Tesibell, who was also an artist and a social worker by profession. Survivors include three children: Jeanne, David Frey of Stockton, and Daniel of Manteca; 14 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
