OBITUARY; The Anthon Herald, 24 April 1940, page 1: Funeral services were conducted at 9:30 a.m. Friday, April 19, 1940, in St. Joseph's Catholic Church for J. J. Rourke, widely-known Anthon resident, who passed away at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, 1940, in his home here following an illness of almost five years. Rev. A. Conlon, the pastor, sang the requiem mass and Rev. George Cook of Sheldon, a former Anthon priest for many years, assisted with the funeral rites. The church was filled with relatives and friends who came to pay their last respccts to a good Christian man who was held in the highest respect in the community where he lived for fifty years. Pallbearers were William O' Neill, Bert Hart, Frank Galvin, Chet McLarnan and James O'Shaughnessy of Anthon, and Guy Hawkins of Sioux City. Interment was made in Mt. St. Joseph Cemetery, with Hudgel's Funeral Service making the arrangements. John J. Rourke, son of Thomas and Mary Rourke, was born in Dublin, Ireland, on June 3, 1872. He came to the United States in 1890 from his native land and was employed on farms in the Anthon vicinity until 1899 when he married to Catherine Jerman. They purchased a farm almost three miles west of Anthon and operated it until 1921, when they retired and purchased a home in town where deceased spent the remainder of his life. Mr. Rourke was a hard worker and very successful as a farmer and livestock raiser. Upon his retirement he took a keen interest in municipal affairs and served for a period of twelve years on the town council council when his term expired the following spring. About three years ago Mr. Rourke suffered a stroke, and his health has been poor since that time. He had been uptown Friday, April 12th, to transact some business and to visit with a few friends. The following evening he became seriously ill and Sunday, April 14th, his condition became critical. The immediate relatives were summoned home and the end came at 7:30 Tuesday evening, April 16, 1940, due to heart trouble, at the age of 67 years, 10 months and 13 days. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Rourke and all survive: Ivan, Jack, Mrs. Frank Carr, Mrs. Joseph O'Connell, and Muriel of Anthon; Mrs. Anthony P. Marfisi of Omaha, Nebraska; Mrs. L. E. Hudgel of North Platte, Nebraska; and Mrs. Ray Cook of San Francisco, California. Mr. Rourke was the last of his family, as he lost his parents, brothers and sisters when a boy.
