When seven years of age he came with parents to America, settling in Cincinnati, Ohio. A few years later the family moved to Ft. Recovery in the same state. Here he grew to manhood. He was married December 25, 1873, to Miss Phillis Collins at Ft. Recovery. To this union were born ten children. The two older ones died in infancy. Those living are: Mrs. Anna Adams of Lincoln; Mrs. Clara Rouse, Hudson, Colo.; Miss Alma Schafer, Nelson; Mrs. Catherine Jeffries, Ft. Morgan, Colo.; J. Russell, Nelson; Charles of Central City; Mrs. Ada Herrick, Fosston, Colo.l George of Central City. These sons and daughters were all present at the funeral obsequies, with the exception of one daughter, Mrs. Catherine Jeffries. It was in the fall of 1881 that Mr. and Mrs. Schafer left their eastern home to cast their fortune in the far west as it was universally regarded in those days. They came to Nebraska at that time and also to Nuckolls County, locating between Nelson and Edgar. Two years later Mr. Schafer purchased a farm one mile north and three miles west of this city, which became the permanent home of the family for many years. Ten years ago he moved to Nelson with the purpose in view of here spending the balance of his life. Two years after taking up his residence here the companion and mother, a devout Godly Christian woman, was called to her reward. Since that time his daughter Alma has been the faithful keeper of the home. Father Schafer was converted in his twentieth year at Ft. Recovery, Ohio, and united with the Evangelical Association of churches in America. He, together with his family remained devoted active workers of that church, holding their membership for years at the Red Line school house and later with the church in Nelson. Upon the dissolution of the society here, himself and family transferred their membership to the Methodist church, being held in the highest esteem as members and helpers of our society. Father Schafer was a solid, substantial, steady Christian man and a brother beloved. He will be missed from the membership through the coming years. Besides these children who are left to mourn his death, there are eleven grandchildren of whom he was justly proud. There is but one remaining member of his father's family, a sister, Mrs. Mary Bibler of Portland, Indiana, who could not be present at the funeral.
