It was my pleasure, a few days ago, to accept the hospitality of John J. Sloan. A half day and night was spent on the model farm of his, although it is only an eighty acre tract, situated a mile and a half from Huron. He believes that to cultivate eighty acres successfully is about all one man can attend to, and that from this he can live comfortably and save money. Mr. Sloan has cultivated 60 acres, the rest is meadow. There is a fine hedge around the entire farm, from which he gets enough timber for fuel. He only planted 27 acres of corn last year which averaged over 85 bushels per acre; his oats turned out over 50 bushels to the acre. Mrr. Sloan also believes in fruit raising, having an orchard of 200 apple trees, 200 peach trees, cherry, pears, grapes, currants, berries, etc., and a belt of maples growing around the orchard. He gathered over 500 bushels of apples. He has been in the county for sixteen years, and is one of the most successful farmers. He has several common pine, as well as a number of Austrian pines, growing nicely.
