Mr. Moran is badly crippled with rheumatism and lost his balance while sitting on a railing. He was given necessary medical attention, eight stitches being taken in a wound in his scalp. Lead Daily Call, Monday, January 23, 1911, page 1: PIONEER PROSPECTOR CALLED TO HIS REWARD Jack Moran Passes Away at St. Joseph's Hospital, Deadwood, This Morning Jack Moran, probably the best known man in the Black Hills and one of the first prospectors to enter the Hills, passed away this morning at St. Joseph's hospital, Deadwood, his death being due primarily to the fall he sustained the fore part of the past week, down a stairway from the Cotton & Andrews place of business to the Village Inn. The deceased was about fifty-five years of age. The deceased arrived in Custer in 1875 and the following year was transported by the United States troops, this section not at that time being open for settlement. However, the following year he returned and practically all of his remaining years were spent here, with the exception of four years spent in Nevada, from which state he returned about three months ago. Mr. Moran was a friend to everyone and to this may be attributed the fact that while he was fortunate in his ventures, he was unable to lay aside anything for the proverbial rainy day. He leaves a brother William at LaMott, Iowa., and the funeral arrangements will not be made until he is heard from. Lead Daily Call, January 24, 1911: The funeral of the late Jack Moran who passed away on Monday at St. Joseph's hospital will be held on Thursday morning at nine o'clock at the Catholic church. Interment will be made in the Catholic cemetery. Lead Daily Call, January 25, 1911: The remains of the late John Moran will be brought to Lead this evening from the Schulte undertaking rooms at Deadwood and will lie in state at the rooms of Hose Co. No. 1, the deceased having been an honorary member of the department. The funeral will leave the hose parlors at 8:45 on Thursday morning and services over the remains will be held at 9 o'clock at St. Patrick's cathedral. Relatives from a distance have telegraphed they will be unable to be present for the funeral services. Black Hills Daily Register, January 23, 1911: Jack Moran, who has been a resident of Lead and the Black Hills for over thirty years, died at St. Joseph's hospital this morning from injuries received last Tuesday evening by falling over a railing and down stairs in the Cotton & Andrews' building. Up to the time of the accident, mr. Moran was in good health and of very good spirits. he was sitting on a railing of the stairway laeding to the basement of the building , and suddenly lost his balance and fell down the steps, receiving injuries which proved fatal. He was taken to the hospital Wednesday morning and received the careful attention of the sisters since that time, but it was of no avail, and he passed quietly away this morning. Jack Moran was quite a character in Lead and the Hills generally, coming here in 1876, and living here almost continuously since that time. He originally started for the Hills in 1875, but when between Rapid City and Cheyenne, the outfit of the party he was with was confiscated by the government and the entire train destroyed, as white men were at that time forbidden to enter the Hills. He returned to his home in Iowa and again made the trip in 1877. On arriving in the Hills he followed prospecting, and later went to work for the Highland and Homestake companies in the capacity of a miner. He worked at the business for a number of years until his health failed him. Some five years ago he went to Goldfield, Nev. but returned to Lead again and has been here ever since. As near as can be learned, Jack Moran was born in Kentucky nearly sixty years ago. He moved to Iowa when a very young man and when gold was discovered in the Hills he was one of the first to attempt to make the trip, which at that time was very hazardous on account of the Indians being in possession and resenting the approach of white men. He was a generous man and well liked by all who knew him. That is saying considerable, for there is hardly a person who has been raised in the Black Hills who does not know Jack Moran. He has no relatives here, and as yet no arrangements have been made for the funeral. Deadwood Daily Pioneer-Times, Wednesday, January 25, 1911, page 1: A telegram was received yesterday from William Moran of LaMotte, Ia., brother of Jack Moran who died Monday morning, saying that he is ill and unable to come here for the funeral. The funeral services will take place tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock at St. Patrick's cathedral, Lead. The interment will be in the Lead Catholic cemetery. Black Hills Daily Register, January 26, 1911: Funeral servides were held over the remains of the late Jack Moran this morning at 9 o'clock at St. Patrick's cathedral. A great many of the old timers attended, as Mr. Moran was quite a favorite with them. Interment was made in South Lead cemetery. SOUTH DAKOTA STATE FILE #24054 (Record notes that Jack Moran died in Lawrence County on January 23, 1911) Black Hills Daily Times (Deadwood, South Dakota), Thursday, July 19, 1888, page 4: Jack Moran received a telegram from Lamont (sic), Iowa, notifying him that his mother was dangerously ill and to hasten home. He left on yesterday's train, the first time in thirteen years he has left the Hills. It is a sorrowful mission and his numerous friends will hope for the best for him and his mother. He reports his mother out of danger. All were glad to see him at the old homestead which he left some thirteen years ago.
