He attended Bethel College, a General Conference Mennonite school in North Newton, Kansas, and finished his 3rd year. On March 4, 1914, he married Christina Katharine Penner, in Newton, Kansas. Sept. 12, 1918, JJR filled out his draft card for World War I. At the time, he was 32 years old, listing his wife, Christine, as his nearest relative, and described by the enlister as being of medium height, slender build, with brown eyes and brown hair. In 1930, John JR (JJR) Claassen and his wife, Christine, were farming in Riverside Township, Gage County, Nebraska. Their children at the time of the 1930 Census were: Anna D. (15) Paul G. (12) John C. (10) (Carl) Donald A.(7) Waldo F. (3) By 1940, JJR and Christine were still farming. They owned their farm, and estimated its value at $30,000. Anna was no longer at home, but sons Paul (22), Carl (20), Donald (17) and Waldo (13) were farming with their father. Carl was now known by his middle name.
