He was born on January 27, 1923 in Beatrice to John and Christine (Penner) Claassen, and was a 1941 graduate of Beatrice High School. He was born on January 27, 1923 in Beatrice to John and Christine (Penner) Claassen, and was a 1941 graduate of Beatrice High School. He and Gertrude Claassen were married on February 2, 1945 at the Beatrice Mennonite Church. Don was a hog and cattle producer, and farmed southwest of Beatrice until they moved into Beatrice in 2000. He was a member of the Beatrice Mennonite Church, had been the chairman of the New Church and Parsonage Committees, and had held many positions within the church. Don had served on the board of directors of the Western District Conference of the Agri-Urban Association, and the Farmers Union COOP Supply Company; He had been a member of the Nebraska and National Livestock Feeders Association and the Nebraska and National Pork Producers Association; received the Pork Chop Award from the Nebraska Swine Council; and had volunteered for Ten Thousand Villages. Don enjoyed traveling, reading, and visiting his family. Survivors include 2 daughters Barbara Kaufman and husband Richard of Hesston, KS and Kathryn Colwell Hill and husband Hal of Richmond, VA; 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren Christine Schweitzer and husband Brad (Rianna), Mara Kaufman, Amy Cosson and husband Aaron (Riley, Jack, and Josie), William Colwell, and Virginia Colwell; and sister in law Edith Claassen of Beatrice. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Christine (Penner) Claassen; wife Gertrude (2008); sister Dorthy Orendorf; brothers Paul, Carl and Waldo Claassen; and son in law Jack Colwell. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, June 17, 2013 at the Beatrice Mennonite Church with Reverend Bob Beecher officiating. Private family interment will be held at the Beatrice Mennonite Cemetery.
