His age was 77 years, 10 months and 22 days. His life stands out as worthy of any tribute that could possibly be paid and in his death the entire community suffers loss. His untiring devotion to his wife, his children, grandchildren and great grandchild, and his home and the home of his daughter was very marked and nothing gave him more pleasure than to contribute to their welfare and happiness. As a friend none could be more loyal and sincere, and as a benefactor none will ever know his deeds of kindness, as he enjoyed keeping such to himself. He chose the quiet, unpretentious way of well doing and shunned self praise and publicity. Such a man was he whom God hath called to dwell with him above. John J. Kempf was born Feb. 25, 1851, at Truen, a small town of Pomerania, North Germany. He had three sisters and one brother. Finishing school at the age of 14, he served a three years apprenticeship with a shoe-maker, learning the trade. His father dying in August, 1868, Mr. Kempf and his brother shortly after decided to come to America and, bidding farewell to their mother and sisters, they took passage on the Steamer Westphalia and landed in New York on Oct. 1, 1869. Having a cousin living near Victor they came here and visited a while. There being no work here at his trade Mr. Kempf went to Marengo, where he secured employment until he bought out a shoe shop at Victor, later adding a stock of shoes, which he continued until 1912. On Dec. 10, 1876, he was united in marriage to Sophia M. Schafbuch of Sumner township, Iowa county, Iowa, and to this union were born three children: Anna, the deceased wife of Charles J. Raffensperger; Edward C. of Victor and George Kempf of Milwaukee, WI. These last two, with their wives, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild are left with his long-time faithful and loving help-meet to mourn his loss. His is also survived by a brother, Charles of Manning, Iowa, and two sisters in Germany. In the spring off 1900, Mr. Kempf arranged his business affairs so that he might fulfill a long-cherished dream of returning to his native country and visiting his sisters, his boyhood friends and scenes of his youth, his mother having passed away in March, 1889. He made the trip alone, his brother not being able to accompany him. This trip was most satisfying to him as his three sisters were all living to welcome him and he returned feeling well repaid for the effort. In November, 1912, Mr. Kempf retired from active business and spent his time around his home and that of his daughter and among his friends and associates down town. He was a very valued member of the Congregational church and his place there will be hard to fill. A member of the Board of Trustees, his judgment was always of the best in matters pertaining to church affairs. He was for many years an active member of the Farmers Savings bank and faithfully attended every meeting that it was possible for him to be present. In a copy of The Victor Record of Apr. 21, 1909, is found the following which sums up Mr. Kempf's life and character: "He is a man strictly honorable, honest and conscientious; is a public-spirited and generous man and hasn't an enemy on earth that we ever heard of." That describes the man as he then was, had always been and continued to be until the end. The funeral was helpd on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 2 p.m., from the Congregational church, conducted by Rev. C. W. Hempstead, of Muscatine, a former pastor, assisted by Rev. O. E. McBride of the Methodist church, and Lyle S. Shelmidine, a student pastor of the Victor Congregational church. The church was filled with friends who thus evidenced their love and respect for the deceased, and all places of business were closed during the hour of the funeral. Songs were sung by the Congregational choir comprising Miss Mabel Lipke, Mrs. George Carroll, Mrs. M. Jacobs and Charles Ferguson, with Mrs. Ferguson at the piano. Interment was in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.
