In his youth he was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church. He was united in marriage to Tena Renken in the year 1885. A few years later they migrated to America and settled in Jones County, Iowa. About eight years ago he retired from farming and since then he has been with his children. Preceding him in death are his wife who died in the year 1908, and his oldest daughter, Helca. The surviving children are Mrs. John A. Petersen of Onslow; John Jr. of Minnesota; Frank of Maquoketa; George of Onslow; Mrs. Henry Kammermann of Wyoming, Iowa; Carl of Maquoketa and Mrs. Orlie Urban of Wyoming, Iowa; 7 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, 3 sisters and 2 brothers. Burial was in Wayne Cemetery. * * * * * * * SOURCE: THE MONTICELLO EXPRESS, MONTICELLO, IOWA, AUGUST 31, 1933, PAGE 1 FARMER'S BODY FOUND IN FIELD Burial Service For John Johnson Held At Zion's Church Thursday The body of John Johnson, missing since Sunday morning, August 20, was found August 23, during the latter part of the afternoon in a field on the Albert Wurster farm near Maquoketa. The farm adjoined the one on which Johnson lived with his son, Frank. Nearby, his neighbors discovered a cup and a bottle, which is alleged to have contained poison. The county coroner, Dr. John W. Jordan, decided that no inquest would be necessary. The condition of Mr. Johnson's body indicated that it had been in the field since Sunday. He left home August 20 to pick berries, and when he did not return home that evening, the family became alarmed. A note was found the next day, in which he said he was going away, and that he would not go into the water, but would stay in the fields. The family called the sheriff who spent the rest of the day hunting for him. Mr. Johnson was a hard working man and was well liked by those who knew him. Funeral services were held at the Wayne Zion's Lutheran church, with Rev. Ewald Senai, pastor of the Lutheran church of Maquoketa in charge, due to the absence of Rev. Willms, the local pastor. Burial was made in the Wayne cemetery.
