Description	:	John Kruse, son of William and Epke (Williams) Kruse, was born on Sept. 10, 1921 at Kamrar. He moved to Marathon as a small boy and attended and graduated from Marathon High School in 1939. John served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II from December of 1942 to January of 1946, and then was recalled for the Korean Conflict from December 1951 until July 1952. He married Frederica H. Shepherd on Aug. 5, 1946 at Jackson, Mn. To this union one daughter, Cindy, and two sons, Barry and Jon, were born. He married Frederica H. Shepherd on Aug. 5, 1946 at Jackson, Mn. To this union one daughter, Cindy, and two sons, Barry and Jon, were born. John owned and operated a grocery store in Marathon for many years. He also did carpentry work and later was the Marathon school custodian. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, woodworking, sports and playing cards, along with spending time with his family. John's health started failing in September of 1998 and he entered Marion Health Center in Sioux City on Nov. 26, 1998 and then entered the Newell Good Samaritan Center on Jan. 22, 1999. John died at Buena Vista County Hospital in Storm Lake on April 8, 1999. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Henry, Eppo, Peter, George; and sisters Mata Kolthoff and Elizabeth Whitman. Survivors include his wife Frederica Kruse of Marathon; sons Jon and his wife Colleen of Storm Lake, Barry and his wife Debra of Alta; daughter Cindy and her husband Eric Parrish of Spencer; nine grandchildren and two step grandchildren; two great grandchildren and two step great grandchildren; a sister, Jennie Weier of Sioux Rapids; and a brother-inlaw and sister-in-law, Gale and Edna Kellim of Jackson, Tenn.
