JOHN LANE DEAD BY HANGING John Lane, of Livermore, Iowa, committed suicide by hanging at the residence of his brother-in-law, L. C. Tifft, two miles north-east of this place, Thursday night. The particulars are about as follows: Mr. Lane went from Hazleton to Livermore, last October, and engaged in the furniture business. Lately, he got into financial straights, and Wednesday came hither to persuade his mother, Mrs. C. Lane, who lives with her daughter, Mrs. Tifft, to loan him $1,000. Mrs. Lane was unable to do this, and John appeared very despondent. He came to Independence Thursday, and his relatives supposed he had returned to Livermore. Instead of doing so, however, he remained at the Hill House most of the afternoon, wrote a letter to his mother, and was last seen just before night. Friday morning, when Mr. Tifft went about his morning work around the barn, he noticed the door of his scale-house partially open. He went to investigate, and discovered the body of John Lane suspended by a rope from one of the over-head supports inside the scale-house. Coroner Hunt was summoned, who said that life had been extinct for several hours. The rope which the suicide had used was a cord used for tying packages of binding twine, and Mr. Tifft says that it had been hanging on a nail at the side of the scale house. It is thought that the deed was committed, or at least the preparations for its commission were made, early Thursday evening, while there was still light. Deceased, as above indicated, was a son of the late Cornelius Lane, and was born and reared in this vicinity. His age was 37 years. He leaves a wife and three children, who were summoned from Livermore by telegraph, Friday. His wife was a Miss Emma Billings, and their marriage occurred here fourteen years ago. Mr. Lane was well regarded by all his acquaintances, and a large circle of friends regret exceedingly his tragic and untimely death, and feel for the sorrowing relatives the sincerest sympathy in their great affliction. His wife arrived from Livermore, Friday evening and had the remains removed to Castleville, Saturday, where the funeral was held, Sunday afternoon. (Independence Conservative, 9 Sept. 1896.) TOOK HIS OWN LIFE. The Suicidal Mania Has Another Victim In the Person of John Lane. The suicidal wave is still passing over the city with all the force of a tidal wave and carrying many victims before it. The last one to voluntarily end his own existence, and by his own will to fathom the mysteries of a beyond, is John Lane, a former resident here and son of the late Cornelius Lane. The tragedy occurred at the farm of his brother-in-law, L. C. Tifft, who lives about a mile and a half northeast of the city. The method employed was by means of a rope, swung from the rafters of the scale house, and the lifeless body was found there by Mr. Tifft early Friday morning. The cause of the act is supposed to be financial embarrassment, although the circumstances of the case are as yet somewhat in the dark. Mr. Lane has been engaged in the furniture business for the past year at Livermore, Humboldt county. The banker at that place, who was here over Sunday, stated that Mr. Lane had a good bank account, and that his check would have been honored for any reasonable amount. Yet it was necessary for him to raise $1,000, and for several weeks he had been writing to different parties here to obtain the amount. Not succeeding in this, he came here Thursday morning and went to the home of Mr. Tifft, where his mother, Mrs. Lane, resides. Both Mrs. Lane and Mr. Tifft were appealed to for the loan, and both refused. Mr. Lane became very angry, and stated that he would never return to his home without the money. He left the Tifft place about noon and came directly to this city. He partook of a late dinner at the Hill house, and in payment offered a Columbian half dollar. This fact was called to his attention by the clerk, and he stated that he should never want it again. After dinner he sat down to the writing table and wrote the final letter to his mother, which was found on the scales by his side. It is supposed that he left town about 6 o’clock, although he was not seen around the Tifft farm after his departure at noon. During the afternoon he went to the First National bank and deposited a sum of money to meet his assessments in the Legion of Honor order, of Hazleton, in which he was insured. It is supposed that the preparations for the deed were made before dark, as Mr. Lane had never before been in the scale house, and there were no evidences of there having been any light. As Mr. Tifft was doing the chores Friday morning he noticed the scale house door was open and, upon investigation, discovered the lifeless body. The relatives and Coroner Hunt were at once notified. A jury, composed of T. S. Cameron, C. Gleerup and R. Hines, rendered a verdict that the deceased came to his death by hanging, done by his own hand. John Lane was born on the old homestead, one mile north of the city, thirty-seven years ago last January. About fourteen years ago he was married to Miss Emma Billings, of Buffalo Grove. Three children have been born to them. The family arrived Saturday, and the funeral and interment were at Buffalo Grove on Sunday. Mr. Lane lived on the farm until three years ago, when he removed to Hazleton and engaged in the furniture business. This venture was not successful and he went to Livermore. Mr. Lane had no bad habits, and he was been the possessor of considerable property, but an inability to manage business interests has caused heavy losses, and this no doubt has made him despondent.
