He died following an illness of three weeks duration. His scores of friends throughout the city learned of his death with deep regret. Mr. Monahan was born in Livingston and came to Anaconda with his parents while still a boy. He attended the Anaconda schools. His father died in Anaconda a number of years ago. Mr. Monahan served 27 months overseas in the first World War with Company D of the fourth engineers. He was awarded three bars for service in three major battles of the war and was wounded in action in France. He was awarded the Order of the Purple Heart and a French medal for valor. For a number of years Mr. Monahan was employed as a switchman on the Butte, Anaconda and Pacific railroad and later as janitor and engineer at the Hearst public library. he resigned from the latter position because of poor health and spent several months in the veterans hospital at Fort Harrison near Helena. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Anaconda post of the American Legion and Anaconda Memorial post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was elected Deer Lodge county commissioner for a term of six years at the general election last November and assumed the duties of his office on Jan 4. Surviving relatives include his widow. Mrs. Grace A. Monahan; three sons, Frances, John L. Jr, and William Edward; four daughters Patricia Ann, who is making her home in Bremerton; Mary Ellen, Margaret L and Jean Marie all of Anaconda; his mother Mrs. Patrick Monahan; mother-in-law Mrs. Marie Marron; four brothers James, Patrick, Neil and Edward Monahan, all of Anaconda, and five brothers-in-law and sisters. Mr. and Mrs. Curt Austin of Missoula, Mr. ana Mrs. Theodore Freeler of Richmond Calif., Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Murray of Butte, and Mr. and Mrs. James Clabby and Mr. And Mrs. Fred McCarvel, all of Anaconda. His son. Frances, who is serving in the U.S. Navy at Pasco, Wash., arrived home Tuesday night on leave. His daughter, Patricia Ann, also arrived for the funeral. The body was taken to the P.J. Finnegan company funeral home. Uncles and Aunts surviving include Mr. and Mrs. Michael Ryan, Mr and Mrs. George Boyce. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Menahan, all of Anaconda. And Mrs. Sally Maloney, Livingston. The body is at the P.J. Finnegan chapel. Funeral services will be Saturday morning at 8:45 o'clock, proceeding to St. Peter church where requiem high mass will be celebrated at 9 o'clock.
