She was born Dec. 29, 1925, in Anaconda and graduated in 1944 from St. Peters High School. She then went on to receive her nursing degree from St. James School of Nursing in 1946. She was a member of the U.S. Cadet Corp. Her nursing career began at St. Ann's Hospital in Anaconda and she retired 28 years later as a registered nurse from Warms Springs State Hospital. Her monthly gatherings with co-workers continued to be a major source of enjoyment after retirement. Mernie married the love of her life, Robert "Babs" Mehrens on June 30, 1947, and they lived in Anaconda throughout their 25 years of marriage. She belonged to the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Daughters of Isabella. She was an avid bowler and shuffleboard player and loved playing cards with family members, whenever possible. She passed on traditions and belief about what a gift family is, what it means to be family, how important and delicate, and what a privilege it is to raise a family. Mernie was preceded in death by husband Robert A. Mehrens; parents Grace and John Monahan; sisters and brothers-in-law Patsy and Paul Pahut, Marguerite and Wallace Mehrens and Jeanne and Bob Lemelin; and brothers Frank and Billy Monahan. Survivors include nine children and spouses, Peg and Bill Kloker of Helena, Mary Ellen and Mick Jacques and Bobbie and Dennis Hutzenbiler of Vancouver, Wash., Jack and Dixie Mehrens of Anaconda, Jim Mehrens of Portland, Ore., Joe Mehrens of Anaconda, Bill Mehrens of Vancouver, Connie and Mike Dewing of Missoula and Laurie and J.J. Dolan of Billings; 19 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren and spouses; brother-in-law John Sandy Mehrens; sisters-in-law Juanita and Jack Roche, Lorraine and Don Kelley, Dorothy and Hank Burgess and Mary and Joe Piatt; numerous nieces and nephews; and lone surviving brother, John L. "Larry" Monahan and wife Arlene. Friends may call to pay their respects at 4 p.m. Friday at St. Peter Church. The Daughter's of Isabella will recite the rosary at 4:30 p.m. The Lady AOH will conduct their service at 6:45 p.m. The vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. at the church. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
