After an illness of more than four years, from cancer of the face, John L. Carman, pioneer citizen and one of the first settlers in Crisfield, died at his home on Pine street, this city, last Monday night. His death has saddened a large circle of friends and acquaintances, although it had been expected for several weeks. Mr. Carman was a native of Pennsylvania, but came to Crisfield in 1867 as the agent of the railroad, which was built to Crisfield the previous year. He filled that position for more than forty years, and was retired by the Railroad company about four years ago, because of failing health. Mr. Carman had been confined to his home for nearly that full length of time, suffering with the trouble which eventually caused his death. The deceased was active in the upbuilding of Crisfield, and played a prominent part in the infancy of this city. He was identified with many business interests which moulded the future of the young city in its early days, and was a strong factor in its growth and progress. As a man, Mr. Carman was held in the highest esteem by the people of the town, and his sterling integrity and strong sense of honor won for him a warm place in the hearts of many people. Throughout his entire residence in Crisfield he was a devout Christian and a prominent member of the First Baptist church. The deceased is survived by a widow and two children, Mr John Carman of Delmar, and Mrs. Frederick Sterling of Lawsonia. Funeral services at the First Baptist church on Wednesday, conducted by the pastor, Rev, Wm. H. Stewart. Chesapeake Lodge, No. 147, A. F. & A. M., of which the deceased was a member, conducted the burial ceremonies. Interment was made in the Crisfield cemetery. The Crisfield Times, November 14, 1914 pg.1
