Sterling Buried On Wednesday The life of a gentle, retiring wife and mother came to an end on Sunday when Mrs. Mary (Mamie) Carman Sterling died in the Sunset Convalescent Home in Marion at the age of 85 years, where she had been a patient for the past nine months. Prior to entering the Convalescent Home Mrs. Sterling had lived in Asbury for a number of years and then for some time with her son, Ringgold L. Sterling, on the old State Road near Hopewell. Mrs. Sterling was the daughter of the late John L. and Susan J. Carman, who resided on Pine street for many years. Her parents came here when she was six years of age from Camden, N.J., where she was born, and when her father was appointed agent for the N.Y.P.& N. Railroad Company, now the Pennsylvania Railroad. Her husband was the late Frederick Sterling who for some years was an official of the Bank of Crisfield, but had retired a number of years before his death. Mrs. Sterling possessed in unusual measure those old fashioned virtues that prospered and shone in the home. She was intelligent and well read, with unfailing courtesy, and deep understanding of human problems. It was a devoted daughter, wife and mother that her life was spent, and there was a beauty difficult to describe in her countenance when she was ministering to her kin and doing those daily tasks which made for an even and temperate and successful life in the home. A devout Christian, her service to mankind was measured by the Golden Rule, and those who were fortunate enough to know her well had an abiding affection for her. Funeral services were held in the Covington Funeral Home here at 2.00 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Robert E. Green, pastor of Asbury cemetery. Bearers were Kenneth Sterling, William Maddox, Benjamin H. Sterling, Edmund Tull, Orin Sterling and Dan Pasquella. She is survived by three sons, John C. Sterling of Newport News, Va., Wilbur F. Sterling of New York City, and Ringgold L. Sterling of this city, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The Crisfield Times, Crisfield, Maryland, Friday, December 14, 1951, pp. 1 and 2
