From "Squire" Moelle of St. Stephens precinct, who was in town Monday, we learn of the drowning of his neighbor, John Lemke. This sad affair occurred Sunday afternoon in a pond of water 20 or 25 feet deep. Mr. Lemke, two sons and a neighbor went into the water to bathe, but Mr. L. being no swimmer only ventured in a short distance, while others plunged in and swam away from him. After some little time had elapsed, Mr. L. was missing and seeing his clothes yet on the bank, gave the alarm that he had drowned. The people of that neighborhood were made known to the facts and a search for his body was immediately instituted. The evening and the night was spent in diving and searching in every way that could be devised to secure his body, but all efforts were fruitless. However Monday morning between 8 and 9 o'clock it raised and was taken to the shore. 'Squire Moelle was sent for to hold an inquest, which he did, and a verdict of accidental drowning was rendered. This is an extremely sad accident. Mr. L. leaves a wife and 9 or 10 children to mourn and unexpected and premature death of husband and father. The deceased lived near the county line in Webster county, but the drowning occurred in this county.
