Father Stutz. ======================= The Lawrence Locomotive (Lawrence, NE), Thursday, July 9, 1964; pg. 1 John Lemke Sr. Passes Away John Lemke Sr. who was 94 years of age passed away this Thursday morning at the Crocker Nursing Home in Blue Hill. He had been in poor health for several years. He was born in West Point Iowa and came to this community at the age of 8. He is survived by two sons, John G. Lemke and Albert Lemke and two daughters Mrs. Aloys Kohmetcher (sic) and Mrs. Emma Beyke. The body will be brought to the Lawrence Funeral Home Friday at 4 p.m. Rosary will be at 8 p.m. Friday evening. Funeral services will be Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. Burial will be made in St. Stephens cemetary (sic). ======================= The Lawrence Locomotive (Lawrence, NE), Thursday, July 16, 1964; pg. 1 John Lemke Obituary Funeral services for John Lemke Sr. were held at Sacred Heart Church at Lawrence, Saturday, July 11 at 9:30 a.m. Msgr. F.L. Sherman offered the Requiem High Mass and officiated at the grave side services in St. Stephens Cemetery. Serving the Mass were five great-grandsons, Joe Kucera, Freddie Friend, Danny Skalka, Wayne Kohmetscher and Donald Kohmetscher. Pallbearers were six grandsons, Arnold Lemke, Jack Lemke, Delbert Lemke, Robert Kohmetscher, Chester Kohmetscher and Gary Beyke. John Lemke son of John Lemke and Gertrude (Hemsenmeier) Lemke was born on Febr. 13, 1870 at West Point, Iowa and died at Blue Hill, Nebraska on Thursday, July 9, 1964 at 7:00 a.m. at the age of 94 years, 4 months and 26 days. He with his parents and family came to this community when he was seven years of age. He was married to Mary Himmelberg on October 29, 1895 at St. Stephens Catholic Church. They located on a farm south west of Lawrence, where they lived until they retired from active farm life and moved to a home in St. Stephens in 1937. While living here they celebrated their Golden Wedding. Several years later they moved to a home in Lawrence. In 1955 they were, privileged to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary. At which they received the Papal Blessing from Pope Pius XII and the congratulations of Bishop Louis B. Kucera. Mrs. Lemke passed away two years later but Mr. Lemke continued to live alone until 2 years ago, with the constant watchfulness and help when needed of his loving family. Two years ago his health failed to the extent that home care was not enough and he was taken to the Crocker Nursing Home in Blue Hill. Throughout his life he was a devoted Catholic. He was of the hard-working progressive and honest pioneer stock whose devotion to their church and community made this the progressive community it is. He is survived by four children, Mrs. Alois Kohmetscher (Helen), John G. Lemke, Albert Lemke of Lawrence and Mrs. Emma Beyke of Lincoln, 16 grandchildren and 57 great-grandchildren also by a sister Mrs. Kate Bencken of Red Cloud. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary who died in 1957, two sons, Lawrence passed away in 1949 and Tony in 1961. A daughter Gertrude in 1909, also six brothers and one sister. Out of town relatives and friends who attended the final rites included Mrs. Emma Beyke and Gary and Mr. and Mrs. Glen Beyke of Lincoln; Mrs. Martha Lemke and daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Duane Doyle and family, Mrs. Kate Bencken, John Bencken, Mrs. Leonard Bencken of Red Cloud; Mrs. Loretta Lemke of Superior; Mrs. Roy Kelly and Lonnie and Mrs. Orville Birch of Glasco, Kansas; Mr. and Mrs. Alois Lemke of West Point; Mr. and Mrs. Lee Lemke of Omaha, Mrs. Theresa Herz of Hastings.
