Obituary published in the Ravalli Republic newspaper in Hamilton, Montana on April 20, 2001. ----------- Information below sent by Find-a-grave contributor #48699201 on July 4, 2016 -- John Leonard 'Beans' Halder MISSOULA - John Leonard "Beans" Halder, 93, passed away Wednesday, April 18, 2001, in Missoula at the Heritage Home. He was born on Oct. 7, 1907, in Hamilton, the son of the late Joseph and Maude Waddell Halder. Beans graduated from Darby High School. On Nov. 27, 1929, he married Eleanor Lofftus in Darby. Beans operated a school bus for the Darby school system before he entered the U.S. Army in April of 1944. Following his discharge in November of 1945, he returned to Darby and continued to operate the school bus, retiring after 47 years of carrying children to school. He enjoyed young people, was a timekeeper for the Darby football team and ran the clock for the Darby basketball team for many years. He belonged to the Hamilton Grange and the American Legion, and also enjoyed fishing, hunting and woodworking. Survivors include sons David and wife Jackie of Darby and Larry and wife Bonnie of Missoula, five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Eleanor on Nov. 10, 1995, and his great-grandson Nicholas Barker on Dec. 27, 1995. A service to celebrate his life will be held Tuesday, April 24, at 2 p.m. at the Daly-Leach Chapel in Hamilton with Pastor Muriel Gooder officiating. Private family urn placement will take place at a later date in the Lone Pine Cemetery in Darby. The family suggests memorials to the Diabetes Foundation or to hospice.
