He is survived by 2 daughters, Mrs. Irvin Zumbaugh and Mrs. Clyde Madison of this city; and 3 sons, Adam of Wolf Lake, Polk of Chicago, and John M. Jr. at home. Funeral was at the home Wednesday. Burial, Albion Cemetery. He, in recent years, had attracted considerable attention as the son of the "original Uncle Sam." This had grown since publication in papers of the country during 1930 of a story about Mr. Wilson's father, Samuel Wilson of Troy, N.Y., in Ripley's Believe It of Not" column. Mr. Wilson verified this story and said that his father's grave is in the cemetery at Merriam, which lies south of here. Probably far more important is the fact that he (his father) was a member of the Lewis & Clark Expedition into the Northwest. He was born in Clarion County near Pittsburgh, Penn., Aug 17, 1835, the son of Samuel and Susan Wilson. There were 10 children in the family, all of whom with the parents have long since died. Prior to the Civil War, the family moved to Ohio and then on to Indiana and settled near Albion. In 1862 he heard the call for volunteers and enlisted in Co. D., 74th Regiment Indiana Infantry under Captain King. He was wounded in the battle of Chickamauga and lay in a hospital for 6 months, after which time his general disability caused his honorable discharge on Dec. 26, 1864. In 1865 he married Elizabeth Dingman and they lived together 55 years until her death in 1920. They had 6 children. One son, Martin, died in 1918. Those surviving are Mrs. Susan Madison, Mrs. Clara Zumbaugh, and John A. of Albion, Adam of Wolf Lake, and James Polk of Chicago, Ill. There are 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. More than 40 years ago he met with an accident in which his skull was fractured, later a hip was broken. In spite of all this, he has lived 96 years and 19 days.
