His brother had married Jane's sister, Angeline Doel, the previous year. The McIver name comes from his mother's second husband, William D. McIver, whom she married in 1844. Accordingly, in later years, John's brother Merritt would refer to him as his half-brother. Obituary. John McIver, a worthy citizen and an old resident of the valley, passed away at the family home on Fourth street, near N, Monday morning. A stroke of apoplexy was the direct cause of death but deceased had been ailing for several years. He was confined to his bed for about a week. The funeral took place Tuesday afternoon from the residence. The services were conducted by the Rev. W. J. Clifford of the Presbyterian Church. They were attended by a goodly number of old friends of deceased and his family. The interment was in the Masonic cemetery. Deceased was a native of Sangamon county, Illinois, aged 73 years, 8 months and 2 days. He came to California at the early age of 19 years. He came to Livermore Valley in 1883 and resided here continuously to the time of his death. He was engaged in the vineyard business on the place on Vineyard avenue now owned and occupied by Frank Walker. Later he engaged in the carpenter trade, which he followed up to three years ago when he retired on account of the infirmities of age. Deceased left a wife and three children--Gilbert McIver of Alameda, Mrs. C. H. Acker of this place and Wm. McIver of Salina, Kansas. He left besides two sisters--Mrs. Thos.
