He was a devout Catholic all his [life]. [He was the son of] Cornelius and Bridget Mahoney. His parents and four brothers having preceded him in death several years previous. When he was eleven years of age, he moved with his parents to Crawford county, Iowa, where he grew to manhood. Following the death of his mother, he moved with his father and two brothers to Alliance, Nebraska. On November 6, 1893, he was married to Mary Manion at Alliance, Nebraska; to this union, eight children were born: Arthur, Maurice, John, Walter, Mary, Josephine, Charles and Agnes. In 1901 he moved to Nance County, Nebraska, with his wife and family. He remained there until 1914 when he moved to a farm five miles south of Cedar Rapids. In 1935 he retired from his chosen occupation of farming and moved into Cedar Rapids, where he resided until his death. He was a [d]evout Catholic all his life. He was a wonderful father, loyal neighbor and true friend. He was always ready and anxious to help a fellow or friend in any need. He raised a large family with love and kindness. His friends were many, both young and old alike. He was a credit to his church, country and community. He will be missed by all who knew him. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Mary Mahoney, and his eight children: Arthur Mahoney, of Columbus, Nebraska; Maurice Mahoney, John Mahoney, and Walter Mahoney, all of Cedar Rapids, Nebraska, Mary Vandewalle, of Omaha, Nebraska, Josephine Wetovick, of Kearney, Nebraska, Charles Mahoney, of O'Neill, Nebraska, and Agnes Murnane, of Omaha, Nebraska, fifty-one grand children and nine great grandchildren. Funeral services were held in St. Anthony's Catholic Church at Cedar Rapids, Nebraska, November 14, 1953 with Father Buehler officiating. Pall bearers were his six grandsons, Paul Mahoney, Harold Mahoney and Eugene Vandewalle, of Omaha, Nebraska, Bob Wetovick, of Kearney, Nebraska, Richard Mahoney and Tommy, of Cedar Rapids, Nebraska. Internment was made in the Cedar Rapids Cemetery.
