He leaves to mourn his loss a mother, father, sister and grandfather, besides a host of sorrowing friends who knew and esteemed him for his many qualities of heart and mind. Johnny Hoy, as he was affectionately known, was a young man who had ambition, virility and a vision and who cherished ideals that were never to be realized only because of his untimely death. His vision in life led him to early seek a finished education and therefore attended Spearfish Normal in order that he might better fit himself to meet the responsibilities he felt would be his. His plans contemplated a return to Spearfish the coming year where he expected to finish and graduate. Placed in positions of responsibility and trust he filled them with a fidelity and efficiency that did him credit and won him new friends and added responsibilities in a neighboring state. Life to him was full of hope and of brightest promise but alas! in this hour of success this splendid young man was cut down by the keen sickle of Death and we who knew him and believed in him today can do nothing but pay tearful tribute to his memory and sympathize with the stricken family who have been so sorely bereft, and who have the heartful sympathy of all. Measured by the span of years Johnny Hoy's life covered but a brief period, he tarried with us, as it were a day, but Life is not measured by the ticking of a clock or the dial plate of time but by human endeavor and his monument will be the friends he won and kept, his clean and manly character, the responsibilities he met and lived up to so bravely and well, the ambitions he cherished in life and the silent tributes of grief of a host of friends who will pay homage thoughout the years to come to his memory in company with his sorrowing family.∼Both of the Marble graves are in the Hoy plot
