Read More	Obituary: THOMAS GARTLAND HOY In the death of our well beloved friend and citizen, which took place on the 17th of July 1934, at his home in Keystone, it is with profound regret that we record the departure of a citizen whose life has been in no ordinary degree blameless and useful. He was born near Ogdensburgh, in St. Lawrence County, New York, on February 20, 1867, and was the thirteenth child and seventh son of Stephen and Mary (Craigen) Hoy. He came to Dakota Territory in 1887, to regain lost health, and after three years of invigorating, health-creating life on the frontier cattle ranges, feeling sure that health had been restored, he returned east and to engage in business with his brother, Richard Hoy, in Detroit, Mich. His residence in Detroit was of short duration. His health again failing he returned to the Black Hills country, Hermosa and Keystone, to remain permanently. In 1894 he located in Keystone, and engaged in the hardware and general merchandising business, later engaging in the drug business with Andrew Marble. In 1899 he was united in marriage to Nell Marble, and to this union two children, a son, John, who passed away in 1921, and a daughter, Edith, now Mrs. B.N. Peterson. Mrs. Nell Hoy passed away in 1923. In 1926 he was married to Miss Alice Brush, who survives him. Besides his wife and daughter, he leaves four sisters, Mrs. John Mallon of Custer; Mrs. T.L. Monaghan of Hermosa; Mrs. T.P. Mullen of Albion, Nebr., and Mrs. Harry Joyce of Boston, Mass., also five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Throughout a long and busy life the name Thomas G. Hoy was above reproach, and his influence wholesome. During its period of depression, when Keystone had been without a practicing physician, Mr. Hoy, who had a serviceable knowledge of medicine and surgery, gave invaluable first aid and advice. He never refused to answer the call of anyone who was ill or injured, not matter what the hour or weather, and his timely arrival and skill has saved many a life. These services were always rendered gratuitously. Of him it can be truly said he was an upright man, kindly in disposition, lovable in nature, charitable in overlooking the faults and foibles of his fellow men, faithful in the discharge of his duties, loyal to his God, his country and his associates, and above all true to himself. It is easier to think of the Great Beyond, when we know that friends like "Tommy Hoy" are waiting to receive us. His funeral was held from the Catholic Church, and he was quietly laid to rest in Mountian View Cemetery July 19, Rev. Father Leo Feuerback officiating. Notes: Thomas owned and operated Hoy's Drug Store in Keystone, which included a pool hall and boasted the only telephone in town.
