Description	:	John M. "Budge" Naughtin, 87, of Spalding, NE, passed away Thursday, July 14, 2011 at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, NE. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 18, 2011 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spalding with Fr. Jim Murphy officiating. Interment will follow at St. Michael's Cemetery in Spalding with Military Rites conducted by American Legion Post #299 of Spalding. (Toohey) Naughtin was born on November 21, 1923 at Spalding, NE. His early education was at Spalding Academy until the death of his parents. He then finished grade school at District # 18 and then returned to Spalding Academy to graduate in 1941.On January 4, 1943, Budge enlisted in the United States Navy. He served on various ships during World War II and was honorably discharged on February 1, 1946. On August 31, 1946, Budge was united in marriage to Mary C. "Marie" Zahm at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spalding. They lived in Sioux City, IA for the first year where he was employed as an electrician, before returning to farm outside Greeley, NE, from 1947 to 1961 and Leo Valley from 1961 to 1963, after which they moved into their present home in Spalding. John was a farmer at heart, a self-taught man that could build or fix anything, and for the past 23 years he enjoyed his job with Connie, his fellas, and the folks at the C-store in Spalding. He was a member of the Catholic Church all of his life; Sacred Heart Parish in Greeley, NE, from 1949 to 1961, and St. Michael's Parish in Spalding from 1961 to present. He served as a lector, Eucharistic Minister, led prayer service at Friendship Villa, and took Communion to the housebound. He was also involved in many organizations such as the Town Board, Spalding Academy School Board, Volunteer Fireman, Knights of Columbus, American Legion and Girls Softball Coach. Budge learned to golf, type, and use a computer in the last 20 years and enjoyed them all. He was proud to have been of service to his country, his community and his church, but especially proud of being a World War II Veteran. He loved his country, his town, and all of his family, but most of all, his wife of 65 years, Marie. Budge passed away Thursday, July 14, 2011 at the Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, NE, of cardiac complications following hip surgery. He is survived by his wife, Marie, of Spalding, 3 sons: Ed Naughtin and Connie of Albion, Bill (and Anne) Naughtin of Michigan; Jim (and Lorie) Naughtin of Columbus; 2 daughters: Gina (and John) Molczyk; Peg (and Jeff) Burns, both of Spalding; 19 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; sister Mary Anne Duffy of Omaha, her 6 children and their families; 2 brothers-in-law: Jim (and Wilma) Zahm of Grand Island and Bill (and Virginia) Zahm of Omaha and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Regina Naughtin, his foster parents, Ned and Margaret Walsh, his brother, Rev. James Naughtin, and a great-granddaughter, Carrie Young.
