Read More	Gaffney Ledger obituary 12 October 2005 John Martin Hamrick John Martin Hamrick, 92, of 130 Sunset Drive, Gaffney, died Monday, Oct. 10, 2005, at Upstate Carolina Medical Center. A native of Cherokee County, he was born July 1, 1913, the son of the late Waite Carlisle Hamrick and the late Florence Martin Hamrick. He was the husband of Betty Simmons Hamrick. He was chairman of the board of Hamrick Mills and a member of First Baptist Church of Gaffney, where he was a life deacon and former deacon chairman. A graduate of Gaffney High School, he was a member of the Class of 1934 at Duke University. He was a former Duke University Medical Advisory Board chairman. He served 70-plus years in a fourth-generation family textile company that is 105 years old. His affiliations include the American Textile Manufacturers Institute, where he served as president in 1975 and 1976; South Carolina Textile Manufacturers Association, president 1969 to 1970; former National Association of Manufacturers board member; Cherokee County Chamber of Commmerce Hall of Fame member; South Carolina Businesss Hall of Fame member; former state president and national vicepresident of the U.S. Jaycees; former chairman and organizer of The Fullerton Foundation. Mr. Hamrick received an honorary doctorate in business administration from Limestone College. He was a recipient of the Silver Beaver, Silver Antelope, and Good Shepherd awards from the Boy Scouts of America. In addition to his wife Betty Simmons Hamrick of the home, he is survived by a daughter, Jean Hamrick Haas and husband, Bob, of Spartanburg; sons, John M. Hamrick Jr. and wife, Geri, and W. Carlisle Hamrick and wife, Gigi, Charles F. Hamrick II and wife, Louise, all of Gaffney; sisters, Florence Hamrick Reaves of Gaffney and Mary Waite Hamrick McLeod of Walterboro; a brother, Charles F. Hamrick of Asheville, N.C.; 12 grandchildren; and seven greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 53 years, Mary Elizabeth Hartzog Hamrick, and a brother, Waite C. Hamrick Jr. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Gaffney conducted by the Rev. Joel Sellers and Dr. Johnny McKinney. The family will receive friends after the service in the First Baptist Church Family Life Center. Burial will be private. Pallbearers will be Mr. Hamrick's grandsons. His children will be at their respective homes. Memorials may be made to the John M. and Mary Lib Hamrick Chapel Endowment at Duke University, P.O. Box 90600, Durham, N.C., 277080600; or to First Baptist Church Building Fund, 100 E. Floyd Baker Blvd., Gaffney, S.C., 29340.
