To him and his faithful wife ten children were born. Five of that number preceded their father to that upper and better kingdom and were there to welcome him to their home with their Savior. His daughter, Mrs. R. R. Swallum, of Hubbard, Ia., was the first of his daughters to arrive at the death scene. Mrs. C. A. Peel of Farnhamville, Ia., and Mrs. F. J. Gustafson, of Pomeroy, Iowa, arrived in time to receive their father's remains when he was brought home from Dayton, cold in death. The funeral was to have taken place on Wednesday at 10 o'clock a.m., but was delayed until 1:30 p.m. awaiting the arrival of his youngest daughter, Mrs. H. A. Triplett, of Griswold, Iowa. She arrived in time to view the remains of her father before they were taken to their last resting place. His daughter, Emma H. Dawlin, of Buffalo, Wyo., was the only one of his daughters who was unable to reach home for the funeral. R. R. Swallum and C. A. Peel, his sons-in-law, his two grandchildren, Oliver and Helen Oleson, of Hubbard, and Otto L. Hedlund, a nephew, from near Gowrie, who made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Hedlund for several years after his arrival from Sweden, were present at the funeral. Mr. Hedlund leaves an aged wife to mourn his loss: but his life during the last few months that he lived having been spent in close communion with God, she holds the assurance that he is at rest in the Lord, and that they will some day meet again to part no more. His death was a terrible blow to the entire family, who will miss him from their midst. The night before his death he confided to his wife his intentions of going to Dayton the following morning to consult Dr. Nelson in regard to his health. He was urged to send for the doctor because of his weakly condition, but persisted in going, as he thought he could make the trip with perfect safety. Arriving in Dayton he appeared to be in as good health as usual, with the exception of a slight cough, but as has been already stated died in Dr. Anderson's office about thirty minutes after his arrival there. Thus, having lived his three score year, and ten amidst the trials and hardships of pioneer life, he was called by the one who doeth all things well and to a home not made by hands, where he awaits the arrival home of all those whom the ties of nature held very dear to him. His wife and his five remaining children rejoice in the fact that his latter days were spent in peacefulness and communion with his Maker.
