He was born Oct. 11, 1924, in Defiance County, the son of Charles and Izona (Peterson) Crites. In 1944, he married Freda Hammersmith, who died in 1997. He graduated from Ney High School in 1943 and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a farmer and a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Hicksville, where he served as treasurer and church council member. Read More	HICKSVILLE -- John Maynard Crites, 82, Hicksville, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2007, at Harborside Healthcare Center, Bryan. He was born Oct. 11, 1924, in Defiance County, the son of Charles and Izona (Peterson) Crites. In 1944, he married Freda Hammersmith, who died in 1997. He graduated from Ney High School in 1943 and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a farmer and a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Hicksville, where he served as treasurer and church council member. He was a member of the Farm Bureau Council, a soil conservation supervisor and PTA vice president for Mark Center Schools. Surviving are seven sons, John Jr. (Sonja) of Taylor, Mich., Douglas (Robyn) of Sherwood, and Kenneth (Mary), Keith (Barbara), Robert (Tabitha), Charles and William (Kathy), all of Hicksville; two daughters, Debra (William) Grant of Bryan and Sue (Robert Jr.) Arend, Mark Center; two brothers, Marvin (Ruby) of Bryan and Lowell (Mary), Ney; a sister-in-law, Rose Albright; and 25 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Also preceding him in death were a son, Daryl Dean; two brothers, Olin and Arthur; and a grandson. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in St. Michael's Catholic Church, Hicksville, with Father Thomas Oedy officiating. Burial will be at St. Isadore Cemetery, rural Ney, with military honors by Sherwood VFW Post 5665. Visitation is from 3-5 and 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at Smith & Brown Funeral Home, Hicksville, with a prayer service at 8 p.m. Preferred memorials are to a charity of the donor's choice. ~ Defiance Crescent News 4 Sep 2007 ~
