Description	:	According to the family Bible, John was born 12 December 1806. He was born in Licking County, Ohio to Thomas McCreary and Elizabeth Roberts. In the 1830 census, Knox County, there is a man age 20-30 living with his father Thomas and this could be John. I hereby certify that by virtue of a license from the Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas of Knox County John McCreary and Mary Ann Showalter were legally joined in Marriage on the 21st instant by me. He was born in Licking County, Ohio to Thomas McCreary and Elizabeth Roberts. In the 1830 census, Knox County, there is a man age 20-30 living with his father Thomas and this could be John. Moses Powell Justice of Peace. Date appears to be Dec 1830. The family Bible shows Mary Ann was born 23 June 1808 and died 21 May 1843. From 1830 to 1843 there are multiple deeds filed, showing John McCreary bought and sold land, sometimes with McCreary relatives and sometimes strangers. Tax assessment records show: 1835 Knox County Chester Twp, R 15, Twp 7, qtr 2, lot SW corner 14, 25 acres 1836 Knox County Chester Twp, R 15, Twp 7, qtr 2, lot SW corner 14, 25 acres In the 1840 census the family was living in Knox County and listed as 1 WM age 5-9 (perhaps Albert), 1 WM age 20-29 (John), 1 WF 5-9 (perhaps Maria), and 1 WF age 20-29 (Mary). Mary Ann Showalter died 21 May 1843 in Knox County and is buried in Chester Baptist Cemetery, Morrow County, Ohio. Six months later John married his cousin, Nancy McCreary on 29 November 1843 in Knox County. In 1850 they were found in Deer Creek, Miami County, Indiana and listed as Jno McCreary, 44, chair maker, $500 real estate, VA, cannot read; Nancy, 30, Illinois; Maria, 18, OH; Albert, 16, chair maker, OH; Sarah, 14, OH; Elizabeth, 12, OH; Lafayette, 6, OH; Ann, 6 months, OH. The family lived next to other McCrearys. By 1856 they had moved to Monroe County, Iowa and were listed in the State census as John McCreary, 49; Nancy, 35; Albert, 22; Elizabeth, 16; Jones L., 11; Emily S., 8; D. A., 6; and Benjamin, 3. Between 1850 and 1866 they are several deeds filed showing a John McCreary bought and sold land to McCreary relatives and strangers in Monroe County and it appears to be this John. In 1860 John and his second wife were still in Monroe County, Iowa and were listed as John McCrary [sic], 52, farmer, $2200 real estate, $700 personal property, VA; Nancy, 41, domestic work, Ill; Layffaett [sic], 14, OH; Emily, 13, OH; Deley [sic] A., 9, OH; Benjamin, 7, Indiana; Tunis A., 4, IA; and Clarrissa, one month, IA. By 1879 they had moved to Hawleyville, Page County, Nebraska and were listed as John McCrary [sic], 64, farmer, VA; Nancy, 48, keep house, Ill; Emily, 23, OH; Debby Ann, 20, OH; Benjamin, 19, IN; Tunis E., 14, IA; and Clara, 10, IA. John McCreary, died 18 August 1879 in Villisca, Montgomery County, Iowa and is buried in Villisca Cemetery, Villisca, Montgomery County, Iowa. In 1880, Nancy is in Montgomery County, Iowa and is listed as age 68, widowed, basket weaver, and Clara, age 20, single, IA. Correspondence: Letter from W. O. McCreary in 1939 says "my grandfather John McCreary was born 1806 in Licking Co., Ohio and moved to Indiana where my father was born 1853 near Bunker Hill, they later moved to Monroe Co., Iowa, where my grandfather died in Villisca, Iowa. My father (Benjamin Franklin McCreary) died and is buried in western Kansas at Kinsley, he died 11-14-1908." Nancy McCreary died 19 November 1894 in Custer County, Nebraska and is buried in Fairview Cemetery in Custer County.
