McCreary, youngest daughter of John and Nancy McCreary, was born in Indiana [sic really born Albia, Iowa], April 21, 1860, and departed this life January 3, 1944, at Callaway at the age of 83 years, 8 months and 12 days. Seven weeks ago she became ill and was taken to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harry Lamb, where she passed away. At an early age, she moved with her parents from Indiana to Iowa where she grew to womanhood and received her education in the (Albia) public schools of the community in which the family lived. In 1883, she and her mother came to York County, Nebr., where they resided for one year before coming to Custer County. On June 1, 1884, the departed was happily married to George O. Benger, and to this union were born five children, four sons and one daughter, three sons dying in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Benger began their wedded life on a homestead in Brown Valley, southwest of Callaway where they lived until the year 1886 when they moved to Callaway. At this time when the Benger family came to this community, it was indeed a frontier settlement and from the beginning Mrs. Benger and her family had a definite, active part in every worth-while effort. They helped to make the town we now have, its schools and churches, active always in the religious, educational and general up-building of the community. Following the death of her husband on April 1, 1916, the departed went to Seattle, Wash., where she resided for eight years, coming back to Kearney where she lived for several years before coming again to Callaway in 1934 where she lived until her passing. She was a charter member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church of Callaway, active in the work of the church to the end. Hers was a true Christian character and inspiration to her children and many friends, during her long life spent among us. Those who mourn the passing of Mrs. Benger are: a daughter, Mrs. Gladys Lamb, and a son, Curtis B. Benger, both of Callaway; two granddaughters, Mrs. George Whitney, of Los Angeles, Calif., and Mrs. Ruth Blakeslee, of Hopewell, VA.; two grandsons, Kenneth B. Lamb and Lt. Jack Benger, both serving their country in the Armed Forces; and one great grandson, Stephen Benger Lamb. Funeral services were held at Holy Trinity church in Callaway on Wednesday at 2:30… Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery. Custer County Chief, 13 January 1944.
