Ogle & Co., 1890), 718-19: JOHN McGOWEN is one of the self made men of Seward county, who came to this state in limited circumstances, but have succeeded through their own industry, perseverance and good management in securing a good home and comfortable competence for themselves and families. His early home was on the other side of the Atlantic, for he is a native of the Emerald Isle, born in County Clare, April 13, 1820. His parents, Thomas and Bridget (O'Dea) McGowen, were also natives of the same county, were farming people and spent their entire lives in the parish of Killmikle. Their family consisted of eight children, four sons and four daughters, of whom two sons are now deceased, and our subject is the only one living in this country. In the public schools of Ireland John McGowen acquired a limited education, but his training in farm work was not so meager and he soon became a thorough and skillful agriculturist. In 1848 he sailed for America, and on reaching this country located in New York state, where he spent five years. The following twelve years he lived in Muskingum county, Ohio, and from there removed to McLean county, Illinois, where he followed farming until coming to Nebraska in 1874. He then purchased the farm in Seward county, upon which he still lives, and after erecting a small house upon his place he commenced to break and improve his land. Soon acre after acre were placed under the plow and to-day he has a fine farm of two hundred acres under a high state of cultivation. His family arrived here in 1875. In 1846 Mr. McGowen was united in marriage with Miss Susan Coughlan, and they became the parents of the following children, namely: Thomas, Susan, Mary, John (deceased) and Anna, twins, George, Ellen and James. The wife and mother was called to her final rest in 1888, and two years later Mr. McGowen wedded Mary (Considine) Mungovan, who was born in Ireland and came to the United States in January, 1850. They are communicants of the Catholic church at Ulysses and are held in high regard by all who know them. Politically Mr. McGowen is a stalwart Democrat, and he has most creditably filled some minor offices of honor and trust. `````````````` Ulysses Dispatch (Ulysses, Nebr.), September 18, 1901, p. 3, col. 2 John McGowen, father of Thomas McGowen, died at his home southwest of town Sept. 11, aged 81 yrs. The funeral took place on Friday last, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery. We hope to have an extended obituary notice in next weeks' paper concerning the life of this good man. `````````````` Ulysses Dispatch, September 25, 1901, p. 3, col. 4 OBITUARY - John McGowen, aged 81 yrs. 4 mos. and 28 days, died at his home 5 miles south-west of Ulysses on Wednesday morning, Sept. 11, 1901. Deceased was born on Apr. 13, 1820 in the townland of Glenmore, parish of Kilmichael, Clare County, Ireland. There he grew to manhood and was married to Miss Susan Coughlin in 1846. As this was the time when the people of Ireland were so much oppressed by English rulers, his love of liberty caused him to emigrate to the U.S. in 1848. He landed in New York and worked for a few years at farming and public works, then removed to Ohio, where he lived for thirteen years. Afterwards he moved to Illinois where he farmed for a few years, and then came to Nebraska, which was then almost a wilderness, in the pioneer days of 1874. Like all of the old settlers he had to endure the hardships of a new country, but by his justice, generosity and hospitality to all, he won for himself a host of friends in whose memory he will never be forgotten. He wife died on August 20, 1888, and on August 25, 1890 he was married to Mrs. Mary Considine, who now remains to mourn his loss. He also leaves to mourn his loss seven children and five step children. In public affairs, in all things that concerned the welfare of his fellow man, deceased took an active and deep interest. He was a sincere catholic and his family was the nucleus around which was formed the present strong and progressive congregation that now worships in a large and beautiful new church erected here. His fellow citizens, regardless of religions, political, or ethnic differences, held him in high esteem, and his excellent heart reciprocated. His decendants are numerous, standing among the most respected and patriotic citizens, and entering now into the various professions and responsibilities of this great state. A rare blessing and a rare honor were his, namely, to have all his numerous children, grand children and great grandchildren kneeling in prayer and tears at his dying couch when he humbly bowed his head to the divine decree: "And it is appointed unto men once to die, and after this the judgment." The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Father Murphy of the Ulysses Catholic church on Friday morning, Sept. 13, after which the remains were laid to rest in the catholic cemetry. A large concourse of fellow citizens devoutly followed his remains to the grave.
