Died, at his home near Ulysses, on Thursday, May 4th, 1911, Thomas McGowan, aged 64 yrs., 3 mos. and 17 days, leaving a wife and 5 children, several sisters and a brother, besides other relatives to mourn their loss. Mr. McGowan was born in County Clare, Ireland, and came to America when 2 yrs. of age, stopping in New York - later moving to Ohio. In 1865 he removed to Illinois; was married to Miss Nellie Kelly at Bloomington, Ill., on April 15, 1872. Came to Nebraska in 1876, settling in Seward Co., where he remained until 1889, after which he removed to the farm west of Ulysses. One little son, Hugh, died in infancy, the remaining children, Mrs. James Timony, Mrs. Thomas Moore, Miss Susie McGowan, John F. and George T. are all living near Ulysses. Deceased was well known in this community, being one of the pioneers in Nebraska's early history, and as such endeared himself to many of the poor and needy who were never turned empty handed from his door. It is hard to realize that he has passed away, and that no more will be seen that cheerful face and never again will be heard that kindly greeting. Mr. McGowan, solicitous for the welfare of his family, carried insurance in the Lodge of the A. O. U. W. and many of its members were present at his funeral. When his health began to fail last fall, he went South, but the climate not proving beneficial he returned and gradually grew weaker, until the evening of May 4th, when his spirit returned to God who gave it. The family have the sympathy of the community in their bereavement. The brother and sisters who helped care for him in his last illness and who were at his bedside when death came were, Mr. and Mrs. James McGowan of Greeley, Nebr., Mr. and Mrs. James McCarthy of Ponca, Nebr., Mr. and Mrs. John O'Dea of Indianola, Nebr. Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Gibb of Staplehurst and Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Kelly near Ulysses. Other relatives and friends attended his funeral among whom were, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. O'Dea and Miss Nellie O'Dea of Friend, Nebr., Mr. George O'Dea, Exeter, Mr. John Kelly, Omaha and John and Susie McGowan of Greeley, Mr. Cully and Mr. Smith of Friend, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Murphy, Greeley and Mr. Edward Kirby, David City. The funeral services were held at the Catholic church on Sunday, May 7, at 10:30 a. M., and were conducted by the Rev. Father Murphy who, amidst a large assemblage and funeral drapings, paid a fitting tribute to the dead, referring to his many splendid characteristics, not alone as a time honored trusteee of the church, but as a husband, father, citizen and friend. The remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery near Ulysses. Peace to his ashes. - Edith R. W., May 7, 1911: Whereas, An all wise Creator has seen fit to remove from our midst, our esteemed brother, Thomas McGowan, therefore be it Resolved, that while we bow in humble submission to the providence of a Supreme Ruler, yet we may express our heartfelt sorrow and sympathy to the bereaved family and admonish them to look to Him who has promised to are for the fatherless and sustain them in this hour of affliction. Resolved, that a copy of the resolution be spread upon the records of this Lodge, a copy be presented to the family of deceased and a copy be furnished for publication. R.V. Hull, Frank Grim, Amos Kilgore, Committee. _____ In the death of Thos. McGowan a splendid character has been removed from our midst. A large-hearted, public spirited citizen has gone, a conscientious, mild mannered man is no more. He stood firm for the right and battled loyally for the truth as he saw it. He had a host of friends and won them to him by his manliness. He was a brave and a generous man, and the large assembly of people to pay their last tribute to the dead, was a deserved honor. Catholic and protestant alike will miss his face and voice and counsel. Farewell, dear friend, farewell.
