JOHN MCLAUGHLIN A railway accident yesterday afternoon at about 2:10 resulted in the death of an old time resident of Lead. John McLaughlin went to Terraville yesterday afternoon to visit his daughter there. While so near the county hospital he decided he would spend part of the afternoon with an old friend who was in the hospital. He went down the Elkhorn track and arrived at the hospital safely. After visiting there for about half an hour, he started up the track to return to Terraville and had reached a point near the new Cyanide plant which is being built by the Homestake company at Gayville. He was crossing a culvert and seeing the train approaching, turned around to get off the culvert. In so doing he fell between the timbers, and before he could extricate himself was run down by the train. When the train was stopped and the body removed from under the cars, life was not extinct, but only thirty minutes elapsed before death was victor. The head was badly injured, a fracture of the skull having been made and the left leg was almost severed below the knee. The body, which had been taken to the county hospital, was removed to Lead to the S.R. Smith undertaking rooms. Mr. McLaughin was born in Ireland in 1828 and from there went to Nova Scotia while yet a small boy. He lived in Nova Scotia til 1868 when he came west and settled in Ft. Laramie. Ten years were spent at Ft. Laramie and then Mr. McLaughlin came to the Hills. He has been living here since. He leaves three sons and four daughters. One son, Thomas, lives in Colorado; Daniel lives in Terraville, and John is foreman of the Titanic Mining company. Of the daughters, Mrs. Richard Lawrence lives in Terraville, Mrs. R.L. Daughtery, Miss Mamie McLaughlin and Mrs. John Klingler live in Lead. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon from the John Klingler home at 2 o'clock. Rev. Father Redmond will officiate. Interment in charge of S.R. Smith will be in South Lead cemetery. Lead Daily Tribune, Tuesday, March 11, 1902, page 4: The inquest was held over the body of John McLaughlin yesterday afternoon. From the evidence introduced the jury rendered the report that Mr. McLaughlin came to his death in an accidental manner and that no blame could be attached to the train crew or any employee of the railroad company. The house was crowded with relatives and friends of the family. The services was conducted by Father Redmond.
