EVANS DIED MAY 14 Suffered Much From Lingering IIIness -62 Years Old—Lived On Farm South of Lamoni Another of our friends and prominent citizens has been promoted to the eternal life which is the heritage of all of God's children, John Melvin Evans. John is the son of John and Elizabeth Lemon Evans, born near Tuskeego and one of a family of eight children. At an early age, he went with his folks to Jewell county, Kansas where he resided for some years but returned to Decatur county where he has made his home practically since his birth July I, 1877. His mother died in 1894, he being 16 years of age, and thus early in life, he started out to make his own way in the world, a conscientious and courageous young man. He worked for many of the prominent men of the community and was successful. On February 20, 1909, he was united in marriage to Winifred Edmondson, whom he had known for many years. They started in on the farm, working together happily through the years. Two children were born to them; Rex and Roberta, and great joy added to their lives in the rearing of these two lovely children. We know but little of this good man's struggles and successes because while sharing the load of many was not inclined to say much about his own life. We judge him by his business relations, a man who paid his bills, was pleasant to deal with, and always joking, no complaining, no hand to gossip, quiet but genuine. His own life and ideals and those of his companion have made their home outstanding in the community and has naturally influenced the character of their children. Thus upon completing his education and labor here, we pause to honor his memory, recall his virtues, thank God for his friendship and honor, and extend sympathy to his wife, children, 2 sisters, and brother. His wife writes this brief tribute to him which is worthy of note "He was a kind and indulgent husband and father though his last illness lasted many months and his suffering at times was intense, he was always patient and had a kind word for those about him. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias and enjoyed the fellowship with his fellow lodge brothers. His was a deep and abiding friendship. Thus, surrounded by loved ones and friends, he set sail on May 14 on the great ocean of eternity to begin new life among those he has known and loved through the years. He has left (...illegible...) many friends of the Lamoni community and wherever he has lived and worked but his leaving has but made a larger life possible and a greater help to those he has known and loved.
