Kellar of Crookston, Neb., died Saturday, apparently the victim of a hunting accident on the first day of deer season. Cherry County Attorney Warren Arganbright of Valentine said an investigation continued Monday with further questioning planned of the hunter who fired the shot that killed Kellar. Kellar, 44, died Saturday night at the Cherry County Hospital of massive chest injuries suffered when he was struck once by a high-caliber rifle shot. Arganbright said Kellar was driving his pickup across a Cherry County ranch about a half-mile west of Valentine Saturday afternoon when he was shot. There was another person in the pickup at the time, Arganbright said. The terrain was familiar to Kellar whose family owned the property until two years ago when it was taken over by the Farmers Home Administration. Arganbright said it was his understanding that the FmHA still had title to the property. Arganbright declined to name the hunter who apparently shot Kellar or the person in the pickup. Arganbright said there is nothing so far in the investigation conducted by him, the Cherry County Sheriff's Office or state game officials to suggest that the shooting was not an accident." Obituary, unsourced and undated. "John Monroe Kellar was born November 24, 1943, at Valentine, to Monroe and Marie Mortensen Kellar. He attended grade school south of Crookston and was graduated from Valentine High School in 1962. On February 8, 1964, he was united in marriage with Beverly Riley at Winner, SD. To this union, two children were born. In 1967 and 1968 he spent a year in Vietnam, serving in the armed forces of his country. During this time he earned the Vietnam Combat Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, two Overseas Bars and a Sharp Shooters Medal. John enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a life-long rancher in the Crookston area. John passed away Saturday, November 12, 1988; he was 44. He was preceded in death by his father, Everett Monroe Kellar. He is survived by his mother, Marie of Crookston, and a daughter, Vivian of Texas; a son, Steve of Missouri; sisters, Loraine Fay of Crookston, Kathy Bogle of Montana, Deane Beck of Anselmo and Mary Eggert of Valentine. Services were held Wednesday, November 16, 1988, at 10:30 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Valentine with the Rev. Robert May officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Valentine."
