Mr. John N. Simonson, one of Crisfield's pioneers, and one of her oldest and most highly respected citizens died at his home in this city, on Sunday morning last, aged 80 years. Mr. Simonson had been in declining health for a number of years and death was due to the infirmities of age. The deceased was born in Hudson County, N.J., and came to this section when a young man, with his father, who was engaged in running oysters from Pocomoke and Tangier Sounds to Staten Island, N.Y., for planting purposes. That was some years before the Eastern Shore Railroad came to Somers Cove, on the little Annemessex River, and a number of years before the city of Crisfield came into being. Mr. Simonson was probably the last of the little group of men, who saw the birth of our present city and her subsequent growth and development. In 1864 he married Miss May Augusta Lawson, a prominent citizen of Asbury District, and in 1870 or about four years after Crisfield came into existence, he built a storehouse on the wharf where he conducted a successful merchandising and drug business for many years, retiring about six months ago. In manners the deceased was quiet, courteous and gentlemanly, though very firm in his convictions. A man of unusual intelligence, religious by nature, as a local preacher of the M. E. Church, he was able to do yeoman service for the church of his choice and extending her sphere of influence in this and neighboring communities. Besides his widow, Mr. Simonson is survived by one daughter Miss Angie May Simonson, of Crisfield, and one sister Mrs. N. Walter Dixon, of Denver, Colorado. Funeral services were held at the home, on Tuesday morning, conducted by his pastor, Rev. John L. Johnson, and burial was made in Asbury cemetery. The Crisfield Times, March 14, 1925 pg.1
